Ski Tuning Problem

Let say you drop you skiis off at the shop to be tuned. You let them know you will be back Sat morning to pick them up. When you get there you take a look at them and notice a huge gouge down the center of one ski(8 inch core shot). the other ski no core shots but it looks like it has been through hell.

What do you do?

"Umm, I think we have a problem here" or "WTF!" would be 1st out of my mouth

If it wasn't there when you dropped them off, either wrong skis(*crossfingers* hopefully *crossfingers*) or someone in the shop decided to demo your boards at which point if they did new damage like that, something serious needs to by the shop owner/manager.

If it was there when you dropped them off and didn't fix the "grand canyon" then the shop tech was either following the tag instructions that likely just said "tune up" literally or they need to get their eyes checked ;)

Raise hell (go directly to the manager) and let us know how it turns out!

Um and why did you walk out of the place without doing it then and there?

Oh I went crazy. They repaired the core and fully tuned them. They tried to tell me that they did not do anything to them but were quick to take them back and fix them up. I know all the guys in the shop and like them.
I was told by people that I should have been nicer. Just making sure that I am not out of my mind.

Just as long as you are sure that damage wasn't yours you have every right to be pissed. Top it off with being annoyed that the tune wasn't done when promised.

The tune was done. The scratches that were there when I dropped them off were gone and replaced with the grand canyon.

I know that this will sound totally crazy, but these days the once or twice a year that I send my skis in for a stone grind, rather than doing everything myself, I actually take pictures of my bases/edges(close ups on damaged areas) BEFORE dropping them off at the shop - Basically, 4 or 5 years ago while out in Utah on vacation, I ended up with a REAL SH$TTY tune with damage to the tip caps on my skis(I know that it makes no difference to the ski, but with how they gouged them it really pissed me off ), so ever since then, I snap a quick couple of "pre-tune" pics just in case.

I guess I don't quite understand. Had the grand canyon been repaired or did it happen after the tune had been done? An you had freshly tuned skis with a new gash in the bottom. Sketchy either way.

Boys, have a mountain shop tune your stuff. The mechanics at the areas will be more in tune with your needs. Most ski 3-4 days a week and know what a good tune is supposed to be.

Drjeff,if you have to take pictures of your skis prior to a tune................change shops.

Vacation scenario is what started my "paranoia" - pure convienence thing where my skis were picked up/dropped off right at the ski check/skier services area where I was staying - total mistake on my part as I should have driven the 5 miles to the shop in Park City that I had used and liked on multiple trips out there before, and have used again on my trips since then.

As for the local shop I use in VT, I just take 'em if there's damage so I can look at the before/after pics and be impressed:rolleyes: - plus I'm used to taking before/after comparison shots since I do it regularly in my office when I'm fixing teeth :) Often I find you really can't appreciate how good a job was done on something if you don't have a "pre-work" reference pic to look at to remind you of how sh$tty it looked to begin with! ;)

i second to make sure its actually your ski. one of the main reasons i learned how to repair my own stuff is so that i dont have problems with people screwwing things up. i personally would have fliped but that wouldnt have been the right course of action.

Sounds like your skis were switched. Make sure your boots snap into the binding.

They were not switched. I have enforcers with a duke set up on them. I dont know of anyone who has that set up around here.. They or one of there buddies took my skiis out and gouged them. Put them back and thought I would not notice.

Go back and have a quiet conversation with the store manager/owner and tell them what you think happen. Let him know how disappointed you are with it and you are considering taking your business elsewhere (and letting your friends know). Don't really make any suggestions about what you want them to do and see what he offers to make it right with you.

I think the first part would be kind of obvious. They tuned it WITH a gaping hole in the base? I'm pretty sure anyplace who saw that would say they COULDN'T tune it.

But yea, I wouldn't just have a little fit, I'd be raising holy hell over a core shot. A deep scratch I might be pissed at, but a core shot? And then to pass it off as having been there?
