i have finally talked my friend into coming skiing with my daughter and i. of course she calls me last night to tell me that she's pregnant. it is very early and she still wants to try and go before she doesn't feel comfortable going at all. she skied when she was younger and was never better than intermediate skiier but has not skied since having her first. he's 10.

my sport growing up was horses. lotsa women ride up until the day they deliver.

what's happens when you ski and are pregnant?

My wife refused to give it a try this past December. She was probably about 5 or 6 weeks at that point. She is in great shape and skied 10 or 11 days last season. If your friend has taken 10 years off I would be a bit concerned. But I would say even more of a concern is the people skiing and riding around her. Why risk it?

My 2 cents...

its not the woman skiing thats the issue, the issue is the risk of getting falling/getting hurt/getting hit from behind breaking an arm, leg etc all which can complicate a pregnancy...its not skiing itself..my wife skiied while prego for about 3-4 mo i think...maybe longer....go for it i say

I def. agree. The act of skiing is not the biggest problem. Its the uncontrollable variables that would concern me most. Throw the crappy conditions we have into the mix and things only get worse.

I’ve seen this topic in other ski forums. It always gets nasty.

So much can happen to the fetus those 9 months that can cause the baby harm that you can not control. I think it’s full hardy to risk something that you can control.

Lets say an out of control skier plowed into a pregnant women and did damage to the fetus, the skier is at fault but the unborn child has to live with the consequences the rest of their life.

I think a woman who skis while pregant is fool hardy at best.

Agreed. Too much risk for little reward. There will plenty of years to ski, and you want to be able to do so when baby grows up!

I thank the lord everyday that I'm a man and don't have to deal with childbirth, at least not the actual physical part of it.

But it disqualifies me from discussing whether women should or should not ski while pregnant.

That's up to the prospective Mom.

If we are talking here about skiing during first 3-4 months pregnancy, then the risk is not damage to the fetus, but miscarriage due to the accident, fall, etc. Fetus could be harmed, but it most likely will not be born. As for skiing in second and third trimester - it's out of question, IMO.

The decision is up to the woman, though.

Hmmmm......so after the child is born are all decisions regarding his/her safety left up to the mother? If not what's the difference?

Read Greg's link to the previous conversation on this topic. No point to re-enacting this debate again.

thanks everyone. it also turns into a pretty heated topic on the horse boards too!!

my feeling is (same with riding) that this is something that you can control. there are so many outside factors(for both sports) that you cannot control.

i personally did not ride when i found out i was pregnant. i would never consider skiing because..well, i suck at it!! still learning!! my baby should be my first priority and is only the first time of thousands that we put our kids..above ourselves.

guess i'll have to get someone else to go with us!!!!!!!!!!!!!

happy skiing

I did not like the thread before, don't like it know. Just a tough topic. Got to agree with Jim, women's choice. I know people a person read the thread last year and decided not to ski cause of the views in the thread. Not sure if I want to have any effect on a decision.

What about your friend. Is she a good skier who is in controll of her movements? If she's still a newbie or intermediate, I would wait till next season. Even if shes a great athlete and in great condition, it takes another group of muscles, skills and coordination. IMO too much of a risk to be out there in the slopes.

As I wrote in the older thread, I tend to agree with you. But it isn't my choice as to what is best for my wife; that is her call. People often surprise me with physical attributes I would never have guessed they had, even folks I've known for a while.

That said, my wife is definitely not an adrenalin junkie. She will most likely never progress beyond bunny slopes. She goes skiing to be with our children. And she didn't ski one day during any of her 3 pregnancies.

That said, my wife took a nasty fall down the same flight of stairs in our old house while pregnant with each of our first 2 boys. Thankfully, neither instance lead to any problems or injuries. But either easily could have, easier probably than a skiing incident.

I'm a bit of a fatalist...when the time comes for something bad to happen to you, it does. There is no hiding. Stop skiing, fall down stairs instead.

Agree. I'm just adding that the level of the skier should be taken into account. As a former instructor, you probally seen alot of spills with newbies on a gentle slope. And sometimes the fall is not due to the skier themselves. "Things" happen when you get a bunch of newbies concentrated in one area.

Some women who are comfortable on skiis, ski late into their pregnancies. Some won't ski at all, its up to the mom-to-be and her comfort level. No use trying to decide that for anyone. Arguing with a woman is of no use ( as if no- one has noticed), and a pregnant woman has more ammunition in store.

I know a Mom to 3 Stair-step boys who skied happily, VORACIOUSLY and well into the 8th month with each pregnancy. All of her boys have been on the slopes since conception -- in utero, then backpacked in infancy, an on skiis from walking age ( gently) The 6 yr old is totally independant on any terrain, the 4 yr old will leave the leash this season, and the 21 month old will inherit the leash. He's also still needing Mom for BF comfort snacks between pizza and frenchfries.

Its a Mom's call. Don't get in the way. If she wants to, she will and nothing will stop her. If she doesn't want to, she won't, and nothing you can say will make a difference.
