My friends and I were up at Hunter Mountain this past weekend. Though we had a fun time overall, the weekend was marred by someone stealing my buddy's skis. We filed a report with the mountain, but it doesn't seem like that is going to lead to anything other than just keeping a record. Does anyone have any other tips as to what can be done to possibly get the skis back? Do they have cameras at Hunter? Should we have talked to the local police? Or does the mountain automatically communicate with them?

So far we're just keeping an eye on the ebay and the various area's craigslist sites (Albany, Catskills, NJ, NY). I have a feeling that they are probably gone for good, but please let me know if you have any other tips on how to handle the situation. Also, if any of you see a listing for K2 Axis XP skis (yellow and white) skis for sale, please IM me so that I can check it out. Thanks!

Sorry to hear about that. It happens more often than we would like to believe.

I believe you need a police report if you are going to file a claim on your homeowners.
It's been discussed multiple times on this forum, just do a search. There is not a lot of hope. Too many people, too much mobility, anonymity. People say to note the serial number on the police report, that helps prove it's yours if there is ever a recovery.

Sucks. Here are some suggestions -

1. Call local ski rental places - see if anyone returned them thinking they were their rental skis.
2. Call the mountain's guest services every day this week, in case someone finds them and returns them. (Last year someone took my son's bag with boots & helmet by mistake - just picking up what they thought was all their family stuff. This was on a Sunday. They returned it to Belleayre guest services very late the on Wednesday, when the guy finally unpacked the car.)
3. Make a homeowner's insurance claim?
4. Length? If your friend is going to get some skis, I am about to put some skis on eBay and maybe we can save the fees.... Not K2 Axis XP's, though.

Everyone should record all their ski models, lengths, binding info & serial numbers. Keep it on a piece of paper in your ski bag. And get a lock or separate your skis. You all know that already...

Chances are someone took them by accident. Axis XP's are about 5(?) years old but are still somewhat common skis on the hill. They really aren't worth much money ($50?), so I can't imagine why someone would swipe them on purpose.

Handle it by telling him to buy a new pair of skis.

Doubt they were intentionally taken what with them being a 4 or 5 yr old model that were overated in the first place. The masses did gobble em up though since SKI mag was so keen on em, so I'd guess someone else who owned a similar pair grabbed them by accident.

All in all, I wouldn't put much effort into finding them since they're pretty much worthless and the chances of anything turning up, outside of the mountain locating them, are next to nill. Spend the time trying to find your buddy a cheap new/used setup instead. I got some 3x drilled k2 PE's I wanna get outta the house.

I agree . . .

Not to say your skis suck, but your skis suck . . . They were either taken accidentally, or you just forgot where you put them and left them there . . .

I'd go back to the mountain and check the lost and found . . .

Thanks for the input everyone. I'll definitely check with the mountain throughout the week. We were thinking that someone may have taken them by accident, but they never turned up the next day either. I thought the same thing about why anyone would steal those skis since they are so old. We definitely didn't misplace them though, as the poles were still where we had left the equipment.

may want to see if hunter collects skis left over at the end of the weekend. some resorts do. you may get something out of it. tell them your skis were taken. kind of like that time i told the bartender that someone stole my umbrella, she sent me into the back room where there were four buckets full of umbrellas, so i grabbed one. kind of like that time my wife left her pitching wedge on the course. the guy in the clubhouse sent me back to a storahe room and told her to take her pick. point is, maybe ski resorts do the same with skis. obviously, you won't walk out with a $1000 pair of skis, but it might get you back on the slopes next weekend...good luck....
