I'm very dependent on my smartphone for all sorts of things, but given its typical battery performance in the cold I wouldn't be trusting my life to it anytime soon.

There are 2 BIG problems here....1. The chances of a cell phone surviving an avalanche is highly unlikely. 2. If that cell phone comes flying out of the pocket it will send others on a wild goose chase.

This is interesting but one of the few things I would prefer to have a dedicated device for. Something that is more durable, waterproof, has long battery life and not reliant on some underlying operating system in any way.
