The snowboard/ski debate is so old it's crusty.

News flash...most of the tricks we see today didn't come from snowboarders or skiers! Most were developed and perfected by skateboarders.

Where are you Tony Hawk?

Snowboarders rule the park scene...
Snowboarders rule the big mountain scene...
Snowboarders are cooler people...

whats next?

Snowboarders are better at mogul runs? :)

Snowboarding is a great sport and I am happy to see people on their boards out there, even though I am a skier and always will be. Snowboarders will always laugh at me when I look like a I am break dancing when I walk down the stairs in my ski boots and I will always laugh at them when they start clawing at the snow to push themselves forward on the flat parts of the mountain... though sometimes I do feel bad for them and let them grab my pole... grrr :)

Each sport has its own advantages. The biomechanics and stance of skiing allows for more versatility in all snow conditions and terrain (plus 2 metal edges instead of one) - thats why there aren't very snowboarders in the US army mountain division. But skiing will always look 'laborious' and 'mechanical' compared to a good snowboarder shreddin a big mountain while draggin his hand in the pow.

Long live both sports! I only hope that telemarking catches on as quickly as snowboarding has. Then all of us can gang up and kill the monoskiers and snowlerblader guys.

Don't forget the Telemark freeheelers scene, which is kind of like a cult.

It is? Who knew? Do thay have a secret handshake too? C'mon, a "cult"? Me and my buddies ski - that's it. Some are on freeheel stuff some aren't. Nobody pays much attention.

Then you have the Alpine Touring technology which is a cross over from Telemark.
Huh? What are talkin' about? AT (or "randonee". Those French - it's like they have a different word for everything!) has nothing to do with tele. Absolutely nothing.

No disrespect intended but those two statements just kinda leaped out at me.

Snowboarding did affect skiing in a very positive way. Without the advent of snowboarding, there would not be terrain parks as we know them today. Back in the '80's most ski areas frowned on any type of ski "jumps". Snowboarding changed all that. And lets not confuse the issue with skateboarding. While that has it's place in the creation of many tricks, snowboarding has its roots in surfing. The creators of Winterstick snowboards are a good example...one an accomplished surfer, the other an accomplished backcountry snowrider.

Any Snowboarders Convert to Skis

Here is an interesting thread on Snowboarders coverting to Skis. For some of these folks snowboarding came of age and left.

Its great that its a free country and we get to choose what we think is cool and sometimes we even get to define what is cool. Sometimes what your parents are doing is even cool. Not too often but sometimes. :D

I made that statement specifically regarding tricks and nothing else.

In addition to legitimizing jumps to a degree, snowboards had a direct impact on the advent of shaped ski technology.

I absolutely agree. At a time in the industry when skiing was in decline, and snowboarding was steadily increasing, ski manufacturers took a cue from snowboard manufacturers and decided to give some competition. What a great decision to make! I only wish you could still easily get new straight skiis.

Word on that bro! Straight sticks are limited production only; either buy before the season starts or forget it.

ive snowboarded for the last 7 years, but i never skiied. Ive been getting the hankering to learn to ski. Id love to try to ski a few times, i know id probably have to get lessons. I dont think i could teach myself. I guess whats holding me back the most is my desire not to "waste" days learning or the fact that i will prbabaly such for the better part of the year. What would my learning curve be? Im a pretty good water skier/2 ski and slalom. I really want to rip on skis

I'm not really sure. Waterskiing ability won't hurt, but definitely doesn't translate to alpine skiing (it does help you wakeboard though). I learned to ski when I was 4 so I can't really remember the very beginning that well. I would say that if you were going to try it, don't give up right away. I know a lot of people who quit on learning to ski because they only did it a couple times a year.
