Two thing... Snowboarding, not snoboarding.

Second, you are contradicting yourself... it is easier to pick up if you can indure the pain... WTF!

Are you a snowboarder? Well then you should know. there are only two place you end up when you fall snowboarding. On your ass or on your face. After falling 10 time in the same exact spot it begins to hurt a lot. You actually start to crindge before you even hit the ground becuase you know whats comming. Everyonce in a while you will get to far foward to avoid falling on that spot on your butt and you will catch the edge going foward. BAM flat on your face. Hurts like a beatch. You dont do that again until your buutt hurts so much that you do it again. Its a viscous circle.

I'd like to try it out just for grins...maybe if I get enough days in at Pats Peak this season I can get a lesson and rental there.

Question 1: Is there a correlation between your dominant hand and how you ride (regular or goofy)?

Question 2: Is it easier to learn on hardpack? Not that I usually count on a lot of powder days in southern NH...

I got on the snowboard the same way i rode a skateboard.

Rossignol Mini

I've been giving some thought to introducing first-timers to snowboard by starting them on the Rossignol Mini. I guess it's a little like the Graduated Length Method used in skiing quite some time ago but I think it has merit. The Mini looks like a kid's board but has the stance width of an adult's board. I got a chance to demo one at Stratton last year and had a blast. It's narrow and I have big feet so "boot-out" was a problem until I reset the binding angles more toward the nose. Note: This year Rossi has introduced a wider model.

My first time on it I was carving toe-side, did a little pop 180, and continued in a toe-side carve riding switch. That would have been difficult for me to do on a normal length board. It got me thinking that it could be a good tool for teaching snowboarding. My child bride (she's only 55) may try boarding this winter. If she does, it will be on the Mini. BTW, it retails for $199.

Has anyone else had a chance to try it?

The Mini

Thanks for the input Jerry. I think if my wife likes it she'll stick with the Mini. One of the kids in our shop rode a Mini exclusively last season and even raced on it (I don't recommend that!!!!).

I wasn't on it long enough to experience leg burn but thanks for the heads up. I get a serious case of quad burn at the beginning of each season on my alpine board. No amount of summer preparation seems to help. I guess it's just a different part of the muscle.

Can't wait for the season to start!!!!!

Most of the pain comes from what's called delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) and the reason it is so intense for skiers and boarders at the beginning of the season is because of the amount of eccentric contractions you put your muscles through. The only way to train for that kind of use is to do like 3 - 4 sets of leg exercises, 50 reps each... at about 30% of your max weight for that exercise. You can target any muscle in your leg with pretty standard gym equipment or even free weights.

Training

Thanks Marc. I've never heard it explained that way before but it makes sense. I generally don't have a problem on skis but the first few days on my alpine board are excruciating. I'm embarrassed to admit that my gym membership hasn't been used in over six months and the only exercise I get aside from unicycling is "12 ounce curls" with Long Trail.

I only wish I were getting those curls right now. ;)

I am definitely afraid about getting back on the snow this winter. Too many winters off and I am not in the same shape I was 3 years ago. I keep saying I'm going to get out there and start training, but there are only so many hours in the day (yeah, excuses, excuses). I did do my short Pilates routine the other night for the first time in a year. Felt that burn for a few days.

Still not sure what to do about the whole snowboarding/fixing my boots or getting new ski boots thing. Kinda sucks that the ski swap is coming up... If I were going to really get into snowboarding, it would be nice to have my own equipment. But I don't want to go all out and buy stuff when I've never even tried it and don't know what I want...

If you're talking about the big swap at Sundown, we'll be there with a ton of equipment but I wouldn't invest in snowboard gear until you know you're really going to stick with it. I started out with rental gear before springing for my first board.

If you find yourself near Berlin, stop in at the shop and say hi.
