I tune boards regularly and have been for years.

Where does he ride and how does he ride?

Park, pipe, freeride, carving?

I ride all over the mountain, trees, steeps a little park, my everyday board is tuned with 2 degrees on the base and 2 degrees on the side with the tips and tail detuned back to the contact pts.

My park/jib board is at 3 degrees on both sides and base and I detune them all the way around. Some people put more bevel on the base and less on the side.

Be careful when you bevel the base edge so you don't take off material from the base. A lot of people screw this up. You might want to put 2 degrees on it, but end up taking off base material too and end up actuall riding more like a 4 or 5 degree bevel.

he's in his 40's, been boarding since the days when there was still a rope attached to the board and your boots were LL Bean duck boots....

For him I would use a 1 degree bevel on the base edge and the side edge. After you bevel the edges de-tune tip and tail up to the contact pts. This will help him from catching while still holding a good edge when it gets hard/icy.
