Late start, but cold bluebird day, and trackless deep snow. It failed to suck in many, many ways.
The skin up was long but thankfully a group of 3 snowshoers had gone up earlier and they were the only tracks to be found. It made for a much easier time. When we stopped for lunch we met two skiers coming down who were following the skin line so they didn't cut up any of the fresh snow. Onward and upward.
Once we arrived at our destination we climbed to the top of the glade. There were no tracks at all except our skin track! As Brenda and I were de-skinning we heard a call from Nick who had just started his first run: "There's too much snow!" We assumed he was joking but quickly found that there was, in fact, too much snow at times. It was so deep that unless we picked the steepest lines that the glade had to offer we would wallow, pushing huge volumes of snow in front of us. Fortunately, in that run and subsequent runs we figured out the steep lines and followed in each others tracks to pick up speed when we needed it. It failed to suck.
Wow, can't say enough about the day. We got out around 5:15 after a bit of a slog out. Our legs were toast but our hearts were soaring.
And some video from the NH backcountry. Hope you enjoy.
