Since we've never had a sustained warm-up here in eastern PA I had a notion that there still may be a good amount of snow left on our local hills. I also thought that it might be a good time get my son out since we'd quite literally have the place to ourselves. So I threw his gear in the car and we drove minutes south to my namesake, the mighty Spring Mountain. I figured I'd take a look when we got there and call an audible to the playground if conditions so warranted. I'm glad we went. It was a perfect spring day. Lots of corn snow left on the hill, nobody there, save for a few hikers. If one was so inclined, a short uphill climb would have yielded some really nice spring turns.
I was able to drive us right up to the base of the hill and got the boy booted up at the car and we earned some 'runs' on the flat pitch right at the bottom of 'glacier'. It was such a nice day and the snow was perfect ungroomed corn. We were only out for 15-30 minutes and he had fun, which is all I was hoping for. We worked on balance, and I just helped him to get the feel of sliding on snow.
He didn't want to leave when we were done...a sure sign of success as far as I'm concerned...so we took a short hike on the Perkiomen Trail next to the creek and did a little rock-climbing. Great day to be outside with my son.
you're embarrassing me, dad:
