Hello fellow skiers,

I'd like to let you know about an event called Stoketoberfest 2.0. This is a ski/board film fest in Bethlehem PA being held October 21-22 at the Ice House 56 River Street Bethlehem PA 18018.

The event benefits the City of Bethlehem's free movie in the park program in the summers. We have been doing movies in the parks for 4 years with 84 events so far. I work for the City of Bethlehem and run the movie program as well as a neighborhood revitalization effort.

The films we are screening are as follows:

Attack of LaNina - MSP Films
Prime Cut - Meathead Films

TB20 - Standard Films
One for the Road - TGR

Grand Bizarre - Poor Boyz
After Dark - Level 1

Tickets are $16 and you get to see 2 films - as grouped above and you get a voucher for a lift ticket to Elk Mountain. Probably going to get a magazine or two as well and we have some great prizes and swag coming.

Group rate for 15 or more is $12 and will be available online soon. General tickets will be available at all Buckmans Ski Shops and at the door.

For more info: www.moviesgamesnmore.org Follow us on twitter @stoketoberfest or call me at the office at 610-997-5732. Please help spread the word so we can run another year of free movies in the parks and in our downtown.

Thanks - A.G. Pitsilos

any fine print on the vouchers? (ie weekday only, one per person, do we get them when we buy the tix or do we have to show up at the ice house to pick them up? etc?)

thanks

Yes, you have to come to the event to get the Elk Vouchers. I'm pretty sure the fine print is that they are good prior to Christmas and after March 1st. We always use them after March 1st. Plenty of snow and alot less people! They are good on weekends or weekdays.

lol, that's a pretty restrictive blackout schedule on the Elk tickets. Sounds like a good time though, may have to combo that event up with a trip to the brew pub.

Stoketoberfest Poster

Here is a look at the poster. Should have a couple of versions up on the website shortly. www.moviesgamesnmore.org. Great way to start what should be a snowy winter and good ski/ride season.

Event benefits Bethlehem's free summer outdoor movies.

Thanks,

A.G.

Here is the other version

Yeah I heard about this event maybe about 2-3 weeks ago and decided it's where I wanna be. The After dark, La Nina and Prime Cut movie trailers look awesome!

Good job guys...any info on Elk Mountain other than the website you can give us from personal experience? Don't give us the usual "surprisingly not crowded on weekends", I want to know what the terrain is like [the trail map looks weak]...

Tunkhannock is a nice bump run. The Susquehanna and Slalom have some nice pitch. Some of the other blacks bump up nicely. The blues are solid carving cruisers although I don't see much carving going on in the poconos. The cut of the trails reminds me more of VT than any other place in the Poconos.

Lodge is descent. Better than Blue's lower lodge, about the same as Camelback. Wish they had some space for outdoor seating, especially in March.

Trip up from the parking lots on the wagon is not the greatest. They should build a lodge at the base of Tunkhannock with a big outdoor deck w space for bands etc. They have the room there.

Hope that helps.

Surely does...thanks! If nothing else I'll have the experience...right?!

Cheers.

And it looks like the Meatheads will be there. Love their films.

Elk is the best Eastern PA mountain, period. Skivideoguy's description is pretty accurate. They let more runs bump up than any other Eastern PA mountain (typically, 3 runs) and many of them have decent vertical. A few of the blacks have long, sustained pitch, which is rare for Eastern PA. They also get more natural snow than, and their conditions are typically superior to, any other Eastern PA mountain. Only thing really missing is a lack of tree skiing. They could easily allow it and have some areas that would be perfect and make the mountain ever more fun but they come up with varied excuses from year to year (I have a friend who is patroller there). Blue Mountain, which gets half the natural snow Elk does, now has some small "glades" (and I use that term loosely). It has the feel of a small, local NE mountain and it is mostly a skier's mountain. Some days you will see more telemarkers than snowboarders (lack of a good terrain park keeps many boarders away). No high speed lifts, which is great as they merely add to traffic and deteriorating snow conditions on mountains with 1K' or less of vertical.

How much better is it than a Blue Mountain, Camelback, or a Shawnee?

The reason I ask, is because I'm pretty negative on those aforementioned places, so much so that I really dont even bother doing more than 1 or 2 days per season in the Poconos. But whereas those places are only a 1 hour drive for me, Elk is over 2 hours. In other words, is it really "like skiing in Vermont, without the Drive", like their slogan says, or is it just slightly better than a Camelback, etc.? Perhaps an even better question, is how does it compare to a Hunter or a Plattekill (3 hour drive)?

Elk is 0:45-1:15 farther for me than those mountains you mentioned and its always worth the extra drive for me. Is Elk Vermont skiing in PA? No but its as close to "Vermont skiing" as any PA mountain due to its trails, conditions, natural snow and vibe. I haven't skied Hunter or Platekill so I can't compare. I can do Elk as a day trip but not the Catskills and if I am staying over night, I can drive another 2 hours and be in Southern Vermont. I think it's certainly worth a try at least once for you. If you like high speed lifts, crowded slopes, poor conditions and big terrain parks, you'll hate Elk. Otherwise, you should enjoy it more than the PA mountains you mentioned.

The trails at Elk are very much like platty (length and pitch). Just has more of them and the lifts are just as slow. 2 hr to elk is a win in my book

Hmmm.... thanks for the info (both of you), if it's as good as Platty and 1 hour closer, I'm definitely going to be checking it out this year.

Benedict - There is no way Elk is 1 hour closer than than Plattekill. I am about 15 minutes from where Rt 17 hits the NYS Thruway at the NY/NJ border. I get to Plattekill in about 2:15. When I google map directions to Elk I get 2:40 to 2:50 for the 3 different ways I could go. I have never skied Elk because the Catskills are closer and I can get to Gore in a little over 3 hours. The best route has almost 45 miles single lane with multiple turns after I travel almost 90 miles of highway. You can add +/- 20 miles to the distance from NYC. Elk is most likely 3:15 for you. Plattekill is at least 30min closer and I would guess less crowded.

Golfing Owl - High speed lifts can have the same capacity as fixed grip. It depends on how many chairs are on the line and how fast the line runs. I would rather have HS lifts
vs fixed grip when capacity is the same because during off peak skiing I can get more skiing in.

Just a note, Elk does not have (or allow; locals can join in to correct this if I got this wrong) the off piste policy that Platty has. That said even if not 2 hours you should give it a try at least once. Especially if you have vouchers.
