Probably a long shot but I'll try.

Just spoke to my buddy tonight and he told me that his red atomic gs:9 race skis were stolen last night during race league. They got the guy on the camera but it's impossible to identify.

If anyone knows anything, please post. It's nuts; those skis are probably six years old.

Thanks

Pete

Sorry to hear that.
These things show up on Craigs lists and eBay pretty regularly and it happens either quite quickly or (more often) after a few months. Keep your eyes peeled for a while (with eBay, just setup an alert).

It's no help to you, but I lock everything all the time at areas like that with high turnover. Even for 5 mins.

sorry to hear about your buddies gear.

I've joined the ranks of ski lock owners. It's about the size of a cell phone. I even lock up my 4 season old B2s. Takes 10 seconds.

Got any recommendations for a lock?

Any old lock will do. For the potential thief just the site of a simple cable lock is the differnce between a quick grab and go and having to break out the wire cutters which is a lot more suspicious looking

There's a free ski check! I use it no matter how long the line is there, the extra 5 minutes are worth it. I'm sorry your friend lost his skis, but as crowded as that place was last night I'm not leaving any skis on the rack.

+1. You don't even have to lock it well, just the sight of it is enough . I have a small cable one, not much bigger than a pack of tic-tacs, had it for about 15 years now. It's always in my pocket. Get one with a combo.

It looks kinda like this.

Just make sure that you can loop the cable through at least one binding...my old Atomics had a small space in the binding and it was a pain to loop the cable through them.

I only bother to loop through one ski's bindings, I figure it's only a deterrent anyway.

That's the same basic one that both my wife and I have. Quick, easy, small, safe!

Definitely would use the check if I didn't have a lock. I've locked my stuff for 29 years, and never lost a thing.

Did lose a pair of kid's rentals once at Pat's Peak, which was probably a result of mistaken identity - the resort didn't even care, said it would wash out at day's end!

The worst time of day is the afternoons, when people start to leave and it's easy to blend it. Stories about if you do a search here. I saw skis get retrieved at the Stowe Midway lodge after some put skis into a tour bus. Of course everyone on the bus said, "not me." - it's a perfect setup for anonymous theft.

Then there is a story about two guys apprehended by police; cops opened the trunk in the ski parking lot and found over a dozen pair!

Part of me finds it funny that locking a bike is just 2nd nature for most everyone, whereas locking a pair of skis is a foriegn concept. Sure there are some bikes that cost WAY more than a pair of skis, but for the masses, the cost of a bike and the cost of a pair of skis isn't that much different, so why would people want to take a chance and not protect them from theft in a similar way??

I agree. I think it's a matter of lack of convenience - it's cold, I got to take my gloves off, fish around for the lock, get frostbite

These tend to be the same people that then take their gloves off and use their smart phones on the lift too!

I used one of those cable locks for a while, but found it to be kind of a hassle. Since hardly anyone locks up their skis, I started to feel like the lock might draw the thieves attention to the skis by making them look more valuable. The cable was so thin, it seemed like it could be cut in less than a second.

My skis aren't that valuable, so I went with a lesser deterrent of putting some stickers and my cell phone number on the skis. I figure the thieves will notice that and take some unmarked skis instead, since they wouldn't want to be caught red handed with skis that clearly are not theirs.

I'm not sure percentage wise how common it is to have skis stolen. My impression is it's not that common, but I've never seen any stats on it. Probably they like to strike when things are very busy, so the odds of them taking my skis out of the hundreds on the rack, are fairly small.

I feel like it's more common that someone mistakes them for their own, so again I hope the stickers will make mine look unique, and my phone number is on there if someone finds them and wants to get them back to their owner.
