Stowe has now clearly got to be the laughing stock of ski marketing. Forever they listed their trail count as a modest 48, even went as far as to call them, the Great 48. I respected the fact that they didn't pad their trail stats much at all.

I just clicked on their website and they now advertise 118 trails? That's an increase of 70 trails, yet somehow they still only offer 39 miles of skiing

Mistakes happen, they are argueably the best hill in the east still.

Their trail maps only lists 60 trails, but the main page says they have 84+ open. *shrug*

The conditions report mentions trails such as "Gondolier and Lower Gondolier" and "North Slope and Lower North Slope."

Sigh... guess they've transferred to the dark side.

:

I pretty much felt the same way......48 trails with an acreage count similar to several resorts with over 100 trails named.

With this, apparently, yet to be determined/confirmed increase the reality is that most skiers from out of state will not even notice the change and in a couple of years it will almost forgotten except here on AZ, of course. ;)

I don't like this stuff either. Was talking with an instructor at Stowe who said lots of folks simply looked at trail counts and figured Killington was 4+ times larger. And these places are trying to market to folks who take the "trail counts" as some kind of meaningful statistic. It is sad, however.

All I can say is: weak. I don't like the upper/lower/split trail names philosophy in the least. If it was my call, we'd do away with it at Sugarbush as well. I like calling a spade a spade. If they couldn't be competitive in the market when they advertised 48 trails, they shouldn't be making up new ones on existing terrain just to get that "edge." I never used to compare open terrain at Stowe vs. Sugarbush based on trail count. I actually looked at the mileage number a lot more. Stowe would often have 2/3 the trail count, and equal mileage. Right now they list 12 more "trails" open than the Bush, but several miles fewer.

That was the one thing I really respected about Stowe's operation. Now that's gone as well. No loss to me, though. I'll stick with the Bush.

Huh? They have 118 total trails. Their trail count is 116. I think they're confused. And full of crap.

Upper and Lower...the usual BS way of bumping the trail count. They could add "middle" and go even higher... Like "Upper Poser" "Middle Poser" and "Lower Poser". Then they could add "Poser Traverse" and "Poser Bailout" leading to "Poser Trail Returning to Where I Parked My Range Rover". That would really put their trail count up.

(OK, I'm teasing...No need to sharpen the axes!)

It would be truly sad if Stowe gave into the Upper/Middle/Lower lameness most ski areas are guilty of. Just a few years ago, they were having some sort of contest to ski all 48 trails and then you got something to signify your accomplishment of skiing each trail individually for the full run. I thought that was great and really distinguished Stowe.

I bet that they even include the cut through off of the quad past the stone hut to nosedive as a trail now.. Rediculous. They went from modest to rediculous.

Must be new marketing math when your Total Number of Trails does not equal your Trail Count !

Right. And their 118 = 39 miles and 485 acres. Sugarbush's 111 = 53 miles and 504 acres. That's just one more reason Sugarbush is better  (hey GSS and other Stowe lovers... please note the wink  ).
