Right. And their 118 = 39 miles and 485 acres. Sugarbush's 111 = 53 miles and 504 acres. That's just one more reason Sugarbush is better  (hey GSS and other Stowe lovers... please note the wink  ).

When I had the Big Pass(Stowe/Sugarbush student season pass which went extinct in 1998) my first year in college..I gave both mountains an equal chance and enjoyed Stowe more. Then my options were The Huge pass (MRG, Sugarbush, Jay Peak) or the Stowe pass and I went with Stowe and bought tickets at the other mountains at the then exorbatent rates of 40-52 bucks..lol

To each his own, I guess. But I just can't imagine anyone picking a single mountain over the MRV + Jay!

From Stowe's Marketing Department:

Thanks for your email, I hope I can help you with the counts.

In the past we have advertised the "Great 48", 48 top to bottom trails. Our actual trail count has always been much higher then that but we only counted full top to bottom trails. Currently and into the future we are going to go with the 116 trail count as it portrays a much more accurate picture of what we have to offer.

We are currently in the middle of updating our web site and the trail count report is then next section to be worked on - we hope to be consistent in the next week or two. I hope this helps alleviate any confusion on our trail count. Have a great day and we look forward to seeing you.

Kind Regards,
Heidi

I find it amusing that people take such offense to this. Anybody who's skied more than 10 days in their life already knows that trail counts are inflated.

I don't think most flatlanders really care or even realize the implication. Certainly the State Attorney Generals don't find any objection to this marketing spin. I doubt it influences the the decision of where to go on vacation. Look at the two recent threads from today about "where to go". Did anyone mention trail count?

Yes but if you've not been to areas trail counts sound impressive. Killington with 200+ trails and 3,000 ft of vertical sounds way bigger than Stowe with only 48 trails and 2300 ft of vertical. Killington cleary has more terrain but it's not that much more terrain, and Killington skis more like a bunch of 1500 ft mountains than a 3,000 ft mountain. The person I talked with at Stowe said folks felt they were loosing signficant vacation business because of the low trail count. Whether that's accurate or not I don't know but, that's the perception at Stowe. And keep in mind that both Stowe and Killington get quite a few British skiers who likely know very little about how Stowe and Killington compare. I do find it a sell out, however.

I'll take Stowe over Killington any day!! A generation of skiers has known Stowe for the "Great 48" and real trail counts. Just slighty saddened that competitive marketing has lead them to change.

I guess their fact checker and their grammar checker are the same person as their trail counter.

I anoint AZ as keepers of truth.

and all the other folks in the other ski forum's. I think most of the folks who are experenced longtime skiers will have the reaction most of us have. BUT, there is a huge chunk of the market that does give some credence to this new marketing math.

In the four years I answered the 800-53-SUGAR phone at the Bush plenty of people pointed to stats like trailcount as affecting their decision as to which resort they will choose for the big family ski trip. I had people mention that one of the comparisons they look at is $ per trail. They also read the ski mags and the reader survey results do influence their decision as well.

If you look at it from the perspective these folks are coming from it's not hard to realize they are just going with what's available to them, infowise. The fact that they have called seeking additional info, that's a good thing.

Not sure if this was a decision by the corp down in NYC which owns Stowe or more locally based but I don't fault them too much. It's certainly not on the same level when last winter the marketing folks at Kmart put up a bogus website bashing Okemo. Stowe is just catching up to many of the wacky ways other resorts have inflated their vert and trail counts to appear larger then they were years previous.

In a few years it will basically all be forgotten. Long live Zip!

Yea, they did the same shit Killington did. And so goes the last shred of soul at Stowe Mtn. Resort. But hey, we aren't their demographic, who give a crap what we think? I thought the low point was making Tom give birthday shout-outs on the snow phone in the morning. Apperantly that was a false bottom....

You heard it here first! Sugarbush is going to 309 trails. The only problem is that we are only going to publically publish our 111 trails and 11 Wooded areas. You are going to have to follow a local or someone like me to discover the other 177. We are very protective of our terrain, so you have to earn our trust before we show you all of The Bush!

It is just rediculous. There is by no means 118 trails. I have skied hundreds of days at Stowe, know the mountain like the back of my hand and could never come up with that count.
