Who knows Stratton really well? I haven't been there in about 30 years...

Anyway, couple of questions:

1) I'm gonna be coming down there on Saturday (1/26) for a mogul comp. Does anyone know which run the comp is held on? Some of the mogul coaches said there's some sort of scoreboard that you can watch the runs or scores on, if that helps.

2) I'm planning on hiking to the course to save the cost of a lift ticket. The same coach said there's some sort of condo or hotel parking lot that you can drive to, and from there it's a short walk though the woods to the course. Anyone know where that is, and if it's legal to park there?

3) Also, when I first arrive (prolly around 7:15 or so) I'll prolly park in the main lot so as to register, get the kids boots on etc. Is that do-able? Or am I gonna have to park far away and take a shuttle bus to the main lodge? Not sure how Stratton parking works. I then plan to reposition the car over to the condo lot after he gets with his team and is doing practice runs etc.

Thanks for any help. Dork

Last time I was there the only free parking was remote. You can drive through the garage to drop stuff off, but that's it. Dunno about the rest.

You may want to pay for parking in the parking garage or score a free ticket on Stratton10K.

Thanks for the info.

Strange that the coach would tell me about that condo parking tip. Maybe he's in cahoots with the tow truck driver or something ;-)

Sounds like I'll just park in the garage. How much is the parking fee there?

Another question: The parking right behind the base lodge, is that pay parking? If so, how much? From the trail map it doesn't look like a garage, it looks out in the open.

Never mind the question about the "base lodge" parking. I don't think the trail map picture is too accurate. I looked at the bottom half, and I see the "parking garage"

I guess thats what Killington will look like in a few years...

It's actually a combo open/covered garage depending on the deck you're on. Haven't been there in the winter in a few years, but I'd imagine based on the number of townhomes in and around that area of the base village (think what you might get up at K in a few years) that if you're not an owner of one of those units that parking in that garage will have few (if any) spaces for the day tripper during ski season (it's actually free in the summer - I'm sure of that after having a few good meals in the base village there this past summer ;))

The shuttles they have are efficient from the outer lots, and the ride to put it in K perspective for you would be from roughly the mid portion of the vale lot to KBL.

If you didn't have to do the registration thing for the kids and were clicking into the bindings yourself, parking over at their Sunbowl Lodge and accessing the hill from there is a great alternative. A quick 6 pack ride out of there gets you to mid-mountain and you can park close to the hill. If the comp is on World Cup, you're walk up would be close to what you'd have walking from ramshead lodge to KBL both in pitch and length.

Parking shuttles are fine for adults who can carry their own things. Shuttles are fast and efficient, but if you're with small kids, it's a major PITA. Either drop off everyone up front or pay to park.

Thanks Bill. The 2 kids are 10 and 11, and are both on the Killington B freestyle team. They better damn well be able to carry their own stuff!!!!

Anyway, just in case - any idea how much it is to park? And do the shuttles start early (I plan on getting there at around 7 AM)

Also, do the shuttles run all day and frequently? I may have to go back out to the car to get a change of shoes or something... Or another pair of skis (he has a habit of breaking skis/bindings...

OK cool. I thought maybe there were some Stratton regulars on the board. I guess those types are too busy making their millions on the stock market (or losing it today) then to mess around with an Internet forum... I wonder if there's a Stratton forum?

;-)

I'm not a Stratton regular but will ski where I can score free or cheap lift tickets. At 7:00AM Stratton is dead, unload the family in the drop zone and then park either in paid parking or in Lot #2 which is just past the base development on the left. It is a short walk, but Startton has a fleet of shuttles and I believe they start at 7:00 AM as this is how some employees get to the mountain. It is a short walk from the base lodge to lot #2, but I usually park at the Sunbowl so I can ski to my truck.

I have found an offer of a few beers and asking nicely gets people to be really helpful in situations like yours. A bottle or two of micro-brew handy may help out when asking about parking alternatives. Given the hour hot coffee might work too.

Here's another question:

from the Killington access road, is it better to take 100 or 7 to get to Stratton? I'm thinking 7 is faster, but I'm not completely sure.

Toughy there. My hunch is that the time you'd make up with the increased speeds on 7, would offset the extra time driving down to Rut-Vegas and then the climbing back up out of Manchester.

Rte 100 deposits you on Rte 30 maybe a mile from the access Road to Stratton, so that's more of the "straighline" route. My hunch is that either way will get there within a few minutes of each other, although the Rte 7 route will give you more opportunites to stop in at a 7-11 to get the kids snacks on the ride back upto K ;)

Hey diddle, diddle right down the middle just be careful about ice, turkeys, deer and bear. If you are going to be there at 7:00 AM go down Rt 100 it is an easy drive if the Okemo traffic isn't blocking stuff which it won't at oh dark thirty. Breakfast is available in Ludlow at 5:30 AM (6:00 AM on Sunday depending on who is cooking) at Cafe at the Light and 6:00 AM at the Hatchery, (Trappers isn't worth it). There is another spot in Londonderry at Stoddard's where Rt 100 and Rt 11 merge. Stoddards isn't super but better than Trapper's or going hungry. The America Grille (or something like that ) in the Londonderry plaza just after the turn from Rt 11 onto 100 South has great food but doesn't open until 7:00 AM but is a great place for lunch on the way back be warned it is usually crowded even in mid-afternoon.

On the way back consider doglegging just north of Weston Rt 100 N to Rt 155 to 103 to Rutland will avoid the Okemo traffic which usually crawls for awhile in Ludlow.
