Went up today to do a loop run in the Pemi. On the drive up, the summits appeared socked in and I couldn't even see the top of Cannon, so I decided on a low woods run instead of Franconia Ridge. The plan was to run up Wilderness trail, Franconia Brook trail, Lincoln brook trail (possibly an Owl's Head ascent) and loop around to 13 Falls and then out via Franconia Brook. But reports from the ranger at Lincoln Woods said the 2 river crossings on Lincoln Brook trail were waist deep.
I decided to scuttle that plan and just do a run straight into 13 Falls. The only tricky brook crossing was the next to last one. I took off my running shoes and socks and waded across. Man, the water was cold, and it was only up to my knees! I wouldn't have had a chance in waist deep water like that! Made it into 13 Falls in 1 hr 45 minutes. Started the run up Twin Brook trail intending to go to Galehead, but changed my mind about 1/2 mile up. I wanted to save my legs for the run back out and figured the climb up was going to take too much of a toll on them. Back down to the Falls, talked a bit with a European couple who were staying there for the weekend, before running back out to the Kanc. Was able to avoid the wading on the way back by hunting upstream on that one crossing for a rock to rock hop.
It ended up being a fun 17.5 mile trail run, little bit over 4 hours round trip. Not much traffic going up or back on I-93. I think the high gas prices took their toll on the number of people out for the holiday weekend. I went up on the motorcycle which gets 40 mpg. A side bonus with the bike is that motorcycles are exempt from paying for the WMNF parking sticker!
