Area skied: Sugarloaf, Maine.
Date skied: January 23rd from 9:20am - 1:00pm.
Surface conditions: Powder, packed powder, machine groomed.
Weather: sunshine until 11:00am then a light snowshower and sun and clouds. 16F at 9:20am, 22F at 1:00pm.
We awoke yesterday to 2" of new snow in Stratton and after packing up for the trip home, we made our way to Sugarloaf. The mountain was only reporting a dusting of new snow, but this was a big underestimate as most trails had 2-3" new on them, with much more in windblown areas.
Our first run was off the Whiffletree Quad an on an untouched Cruiser making fresh powder turns down the full length of the trail. I did this again while my friend skied Whiffletree which was beautifully groomed.
Cruiser:
Next up we hit King Pine bowl and skied Ramdown which was not so hot with groomed packed powder mixed in with death cookies. Widowmaker was a bit chunky at the top, but transitioned to silky smooth snow further down. Flume was groomed and I think I made one of two turns flying down it back to a powdery Tohaul.
Haulback was great with powder on skiers right and left with groomed snow down the middle and suprisingly free of the normal ice it has at the steep section near the bottom of the trail.
The trail of the day was Misery Whip which easily had 6-8" of powder either from the sky or blown in by the wind, but it was fantastic with powder covered moguls the whole length of the trail.
Misery Whip:
Boomauger was the best groomed trail of the day with silky smooth snow and powder leftovers on the trail edges, we did this to springboard which combine for a nice 2000' vertical descent.
Spillway was on wind hold until 11:00am and it finally opened up when the winds calmed down. Bubblecuffer was the first trail on the list with lots of powder covered moguls that still had rutted ice underneath, but much improved from monday. I did Winter's Way alone while my friend skied Sluice. Winter's Way had a tricky enterance with a sheet of rutted ice on the headwall followed by a tight windblown line about 5-10' wide down skiers left.
Bubblecuffer:
The snow was quite deep in spots and I got stuck on one mogul and sank down in the 1-2' of windblown powder snow. Further down below Midstation X-Cut the trail had powder filled mini moguls that where fun to ski.
Winter's Way:
Lower Winter's Way:
Our last run of the day was off the Spillway chair to Binder and Tote Road for a thigh burning finale.
