Trip Report:
Arrived Moday morning the 26th for a perfect bluebird day on the loaf. Temps have been in the low teens early morning to mid 20's in the afternoon. Zero crowds all week (until today) and the weather has been outstanding. We were supposed to head home Friday night, but extended our stay an extra day to enjoy the fresh pow from the 3/2 storm.
It's 5pm Friday as I write this and there is about 10" on the ground so far with another 6-10" expected by morning. We had very high winds this morning and heavy snow/white out conditions. The only upper mountain lift open this morning was the super-quad and the lines got pretty long with about a 15 minute wait. We got in 5 (awesome) powder runs before they closed down the quad for wind hold (the wind was really honking and we pretty much were expecting them to shut down). This was our first experience in anything close to powder, we're upper level intermediate skiers on the groomed, yup; typical eastern skiers. Did one split, one face plant, and one 360 degree wipeout before I finally got the hang of sitting back and floating the tips.
They're planning to groom out 60+ trails tomorrow, but there should be plenty of natural trails too. I don't ski the trees, but people I've talked to on the lifts the past few days said there was plenty of deep powder in the glades all week, so if you're into the trees it should be outstanding tomorrow. I also heard they're planning to open the snowfields.
Quick update for Saturday 3/3
Saturday was a perfect day weather wise, blue skies and temps around mid 20's in the morning. The first few runs were incredible! The groomers left plenty of space untouched on the sides of the groomed trails so everyone was happy. Looks like everybody was anticipating the great conditions after the storm. I've never seen so many people on the mountain at once! If you've ever watched the movie Hot Dog (great movie), you'll know what I mean when I say "chinese downhill"..:-o Plus the temps warmed up quite a bit and by noontime there was a lot of crud and moguls forming and lots of people out of crontrol. Saw one poor soul who fell, reset his binding, then dropped his ski and it took off 20 mph straight line down spill way. Everyone on the chairs yelling "ski! ski!" as it flew by. We finally managed to escape the massive crowds over on the bucksaw chair by windrow where there was virtually no lines! So we hung out on windrow and glancer for a bunch of really great runs. I jumped off the side of glancer once to cut around a tree and did another face plant, then sunk up to my chest in snow! The drifts around the trees are very deep!
If you're heading up for the week you're in for a great trip!
