I was reading an old book called, "Amazing America" by Jane and Michael Stern published in 1977. It's a guide of sights to see broken down by state. In the book they mention a "Heavyweight Ski Contest" at Sugarloaf the first week of April.
Does anyone know about this? Pics would be great!
Don't bother to strap on a pair of skis for this contest unless you have eaten a double order of pancakes and can easily tip the scales at 250. In some years a total poundage of over 20,000 has descended the beautiful slopes of this northern ski resort in competition at the Heavyweight Ski Contest.
Competition for skiing chubbies and chubbettes begins with a banquet, where contestants fill up before the run. We are not sure if the resort keeps a winch on hand in case of slope accidents, but we do know that ski runs are cleared of fragile-boned folks before the heavyweights tumble down.
Entry fees at the Heavyweight Ski Contest are determined at a cost-per-pound rate. The proceeds go to charity, and winners are determined by a handicap system that gives the really big fellows (over 400 lbs.) a break.
