Sugarloaf - Newbie Snowfields - Backside vs. Front Face?

So - I haven't done the snowfields at Sugarloaf but would like to try. I am an 'above average' skier I guess... Can do any groomed black run at the loaf, and can pick my way down steeper bump runs. Might not look graceful but I can get down in control with not much problem.

I have read some horror stories about White Nitro (sliding under the fence etc) - so that makes me hesitant about anything off the front face from steepness factor...?

If you were a 'first time' snowfield skier... is the backside the way to go if open? it seems like it is not quite so steep. Is that accurate?

Any recommendations would be appreciated! :spread:

Just as long as everything is not frozen you should be able to ski it without any difficulty. White Nitro is nasty just because it has snowmaking and is steep and smooth and often icy. The rest of the snowfields are natural, so there are terrain features and treetops to ski around and stop you if you fall.

Somewhat of aside from the post, but where does the "backside" go? Does it actually go down the opposite side of the mountain from the lifts? Is there a hike out? I've never been to Sugarloaf, only have seen the trail map. So it's hard to have a 3D picture in mind about what is really happening.

There's a traverse the skirts around and drops you off at the top off Haulback.

My son and I skied down the backside quite a bit last April and here are pictures of High Rigger (near the summit) and Pure Heat to give you some perspective on the steepness of the terrain:

Nice pics. Looks like you hit great conditions! Hope I get the same when I go for my first visit there April 4/5!
