jeez, a free snow cat service to back bowls. hate to hear about any joeys getting in over there heads. hopefully folks will be smart. i am a strong believer in hiking being a part of going off the map unless you pay for a service such as a snowcat or heli to get you there.

Oil, I'm not following you logic here. You seem to be saying it's ok to pay for a snow cat, but if it's free then you're against it.

BTW, they offered free snow cat service at Copper (not Cooper like the 1st article)last season. I saw a small line waiting for the next one and axed a guy how much and was told nothing. We were all over that. To tell the truth it was great bowl skiing off the cat, but the lift service was just as good.

yea. charging for backcountry access via mobile transportation generally seperates the people who know what they are looking for from folks just looking to do something cool. charging for something always seperates those folks that truly want to go after something from those that just see an open door on a snow cat and hop on.

HPD - is the snowcat service down at the bottom of Copper Bowl off the backside of Union Peak? I haven't been out to Copper in about 4 years now and they were talking about offering snowcat service up the other side (across from the Big Chief lift) which was going to be called Tucker Mt as I recall. That always looked mighty sweet. How was it?

I love Copper - I've been there about 6-8 times since the late 80s.

Chile, it was great. The cat picked people up about 50 yards, skier's right from the base of the lift you mentioned. The cat followed the same path each time, takes you up, drops everyone off at the same spot, back down for more. You then make your way across the ridge to drop in where you choose.

When those bowls are open Copper is tough to beat. The only place I like better in the area is A-Basin, which I've read is going to have a major lift serviced terrain expansion either next season or the year after. :D
