Date skied: January 11, 2009
Resort: Mount Sunapee NH
Conditions: 4-5" fluff to start, another 1-2" by noon
Weather: Light snow into early afternoon, then increasing sun > bluebird the last couple hours and temps rising to ~20. Little wind except occasionally some gusts near the summit.
My first time to Sunapee, with my son and another family. Sunapee is known for its grooming, which to me was cause for concern, although apparently they did most of their work yesterday evening before most of the snow fell. So when the lifts started spinning at 8 a.m. there was no corduroy anywhere but at least a few inches of soft goodness everywhere. Some boot-high untracked to be had, especially in the early a.m. on the edges of Blastoff. ROTD (x2) may have been Williamson's, lightly traficked and lots of untracked on ungroomed edges but by noontime it was closed for "thin cover" (boo).
Lift lines weren't bad -- worst was maybe 3-4 min once on the HSQ but I did a lot of runs on Sun Bowl to avoid peak crowds. Kept to my plan to ski my ass off from 8 a.m. through lunch hour. Did a few runs off the North Peak Triple after lunch but my legs were getting toasted and the Goose Bumps steeps were pretty scraped off, not my best run but nice scenery (too tired to upload pics right now). Looked like nice bumps on Upper Flying Goose but today was not to be a bump day for me. Also to the extent glades were open they were pretty sketchy with considerable ice storm debris.
By mid- to late afternoon it took more work to avoid scraped-off. Finished by hooking up with my son and his friends in the main freestyle terrain park. No tricks for me but the silly kids left lots of lightly tracked or occasional untracked on the edges of Pipeline, Jetstream and all over Eliot Slope. So I was still finding some boot-top stashes after 4 p.m. Fun way to end the day.
