Sunapee ski resort, 12-25-10, skied 9am-3:30pm.
This was my return to sking after being off skis for over ten years. Its been a long time!! Back when I was sking, the skis were tall and straight. Now the skis are shaped, lots of snowboarders, everyone is wearing helmets, and lift tickets are super pricey.
I decided to take off sking on X-mas day on a solo mission. I love the feeling when you are heading to the mountain. Just cant wait to get out there. I got up at Sunapee around 8:30am after cranking some Sevendust, Godsmack, Nickelback, and some Shinedown on the way up. Once there, I went to the Spruce Lodge got my eye poked out of its socket when I paid 70 dollars for a lift ticket. (Keep in mind, last time I skied the tickets were alot cheaper, so maybe 70 is a fair deal these days and i just dont know it yet).
Once I had the lift ticket I grabbed my stuff from the car and went into the lodge to suit up. Whats funny is I forgot how much stuff to wear when sking. Man I was a total newbie again! I decided to wear my CTI knee brace on the knee that had ACL surgery last year. My knee is 100% but i figured the added protection the first time out was a good insurance for me.
I headed out on the mountain and was pretty surprised at how the new ski's turned. Or alteast they felf good, probably should have brought my relics and then skid the new ski's after. But the new skis that i borrowed felt good. I think they were 180's. The new boots that I got were Nordica Tecnika's that are a step below top of line., Boots were awesome!
Soo I got out on the mountain and was pretty rusty. I took some time getting used to the slopes and pretty much just worked on my turns. I didnt like how Sunapee has their trail heads set up. It takes WAY to long to get up to speed. You come off the lift and have to start using your poles. If you dont, then you have a 2mph glide for a few hundred feet just to actually start the trail. The trails were not challenging at all, there were no steep inclines, and I pretty much was not challenged.
I am not an expert skier or anything but I just felt like the place didnt challenge me. I seemed to bounce back from the time off pretty quickly and I was getting bored as the day went on. I did run into a hot asian chick on the trail that needed help getting back on her feet. That was time well spent ;-)
Overall Sunapee was a fun day. There were some trails that were not open and there were some icey spots and the snow was soso. It was a good place to knock the rust off but I was wishing that I was at a bigger mountain. I was also surprised that Sunapee did not have any fireplaces, or woodstoves in the lodges to warm up. Whats the deal with that???
