Date(s) Skied: 3/30/11
Resort or Ski Area: Sunapee
Conditions: Loose stuff on top of very firm ("ice" and in many places real ice) surface.
Trip Report: Despite lots of sun (blue skies and low wind), it did not soften up much. It wasn't terrible, just typical NE conditions. In the morning, loose granular layer (thin) on top of icy sheets of varying harndess. The sun did transform the loose stuff later on in the day into a softer loose granular but the underlyig icy substrate did not yield much of it hardness.
The exception where a couple of connecting trails that lead from the top of North Triple into the sun bowl.
Due to southern exposure, the snow actually did transform into corn for a while and the base underneath got quite edgable. There was also a strech of moguls there that was a real pleasure to rip through. Later in the afternoon, that got baked into mush.
All else was less than optimal. It was good to get out and enjoy a nice sunny day, but after a recent trip out to Canadian Rockies, it was painfull to have to recalibrate my critretia of what constitutes good skiing conditions back to NE standards.
