Resort or Ski Area: Sunday River

Conditions: Spring like snow AM - Frozen Granular PM

Trip Report: Interesting day at Sunday River. My first time there with my family. It was very warm driving up the access road at 9AM - 43 degrees! We are beginning skiers (my boys second time on skis, and my wife and I are getting back in the swing of things after a "few years off".) so we stuck to the South Ridge area for the most of the day, and made a few runs down from North Peak. The warm morning made the snow very soft in the morning and then as the temps got colder, the soft snow that was craved off in the AM froze up and got very heavy to ski through. For the more advanced skier it probably wasn't a big deal but it certainly made turning difficult. Skis kept getting hung up in the frozen stuff. But with the weather lately it sure could have been worse! We were skiing on snow all day.

It seemed very busy, and a lot of the lower trails seems pretty scraped off by the end of the day... but we never waited more than 5 minutes for a lift which was cool. Would be interested to hear how the conditions were from folks that were able to get higher up the mountain. Nice day - especially since we used a Maine Winterkids pass for one of my boys and had 2 free passes from the Trek across Maine ride I did - made it worth the money for sure! We are looking forward to coming back soon.

The upper half was ok until about 11am. I met some of the SR regulars from that board, Did laps on Northern lights and Air glow off Aurora. Snow held up pretty well until about 10.30 when the masses arrived. It was a hard base that had softened up with the warm temps. Spring skiing again. When I drove through Gorham NH about 7 it was 44 deg. F When I road back around 1 is 34 F.

All I heard was it was much better Friday. Skied with Thaller1 and Whaller1 and skiers right and left from the Sr board. The stuff off Spruce seemed to bit thin before the lift. (Risky Business) I thought the snow was pretty good. The crowds were well below a normal Sat. Alot of folk starting apres ski early getting ready for Sats games.
