Resort or Ski Area: Sunday River - Newry, ME

Conditions: Packed Powder / Chowder

Trip Report: Hit up SR again today... Not the powder day that yesterday was, but still had a great day.

They groomed a lot of stuff, but the sides of MANY trails were left untouched and sweet...

Some wind out there today... Aurora, White Heat and the Chondola were on wind hold most of / all of today.

We stayed in the heart of the mountain today, a lot of runs off of Barker, a couple Spruce runs and some Lift 6 action... (The best thing about the Chondola going on hold is that they fire up lift 6... Some GREAT laps off that chair today.)

I only took one picture today, a shot looking back up 3D... which the Snow Report said was groomed, but it very obviously wasn't :smile::daffy:

It was certainly the run of the day for me.

Another great day at the River... It'll be a bit before I get back out there (next weekend hopefully).

Oh, here's my Phresheez track: http://phresheez.com/site/dash.php?date=20110113&buddy=Wjenness

so is 3D no longer used for a park?

IMO that would be a great thing.

It hasn't been for as long as I've been conscious of it being a trail (four years or so?)... The past few years it's been a RARELY groomed blue that has been quite bumped frequently...

I got up this morning and wanted to go ski it because it was AWESOME yesterday, and was disappointed when I read the list of trails that weren't groomed at all (White Heat, Black Hole, and something else that wasn't 3D)... So I didn't get over there for quite a while, but when I did and looked, all I could do was smile and attack it. So.Much.Fun.

cool. guess it's been 3 seasons since I had a pass there, but I seem to recall it being a park. In my visits for day trips since I haven't skied it.

If the snow's good on your next day trip... check it out...

Between 3D, Absolutely and Enchanted Forest, there's enough technical low-angle stuff off of lift 6 to keep me busy for quite a while.

3D is a weird deal. They seem to take awhile to open it and then rarely groom it. And they rate it as a blue, but by SR standards it's clearly a black. It's like 3D is haunted or something.

When it's bumped, it is a lot more difficult than your standard issue SR Blue... (I'm thinking Amex, Risky, Escapade)... but it isn't that steep... and if they groomed it as much as the others, it'd be similar... I'm happy they don't groom it though.... They groom so much, having a low angle trail like that I can practice my non-existent ungroomed skills on is a good thing... It's an ideal trail for it, because there are easy options next to it (DreamMaker) it isn't a big connector trail (like many at SR) and it's in a fairly central yet quiet location.

I agree. Memory tells me it's often not open, though. It seems oddly low priority.

I <3 3D.

The top part could be a black, the bottom part has the best hero bumps ever. And it's so lappable, I can do a NP lift and trip down in 10 mins. It opened right after the Xmas storm, I think I skied it that Monday or Tuesday, could drop down into the left side and it was deep, sheltered from the wind. Just something about 3D...love it. Also good to cut off halfway down to the run under the lift is open (bottom of No. exposure) usually ungroomed soft bumps. THanks for the pic...will be there on Sat but suspect it won't look the same.

That's Absolutely, and I agree, I love that trail too.

Last year during a nice warm spring day after a snow storm I was doing Lift 6 -> 3D -> Absolutely -> Lift 6 most of the afternoon... It was AWESOME.
