Resort or Ski Area: Sunday River

Conditions: 12/15: PP, groomed, powder
12/16: PP/chop, powder, snowing all day

Trip Report: These were the best conditions I've seen at SR. Sides of obvious, popular trails had pockets of ankle-to-boot deep untracked all weekend, with occasional knee-deep. Obvious lines on natural trails were soft packed powder bumps with some obstacles in the troughs. Snowmaking whales were nasty concrete by comparison, so we avoided those as much as possible. They're doing lots of snowmaking. Crowds were light for a weekend.

Saturday we slept in and got on the hill around 10:30. We did some runs on White Cap and Locke then met friends. In the afternoon we worked our way across to Aurora and Jordan, which was a waste of time -- that side of the resort seemed to need a few more dumps and/or more time.

Today it started snowing between 7 and 8. We slept in, had a great breakfast at the diner in Bethel, and got on the hill around 10:30. (This is a recurring theme this year. We are really enjoying sleeping in. Today we rationalized that there wasn't enough overnight snow to make a pow day by first chair.) It snowed hard between about 9 and early afternoon. We mostly stayed on Locke and did Uppercut to one thing or another all day.

Around 3:15 we saw that the snow had eased considerably, so we decided to make a break for it. We left the parking lot right at 4. 26 was well plowed the whole way, then 95 was a bit scary by comparison. Before long the ice turned to rain, and the roads were wet but otherwise clear by the time we crossed back into MA.
