Sunday River... mid winter conditions? I'll take it.

Was up there for first chair as well! Headed straight to Spruce for my first lap. Risky Business was my choice and holy $h*t it was fantastic. Skier's left had mini drifts of snow that were sooooo fun! I saw SR post on Facebook just a few minutes ago that it was their favorite too! I could hear AmEx from the chair so I avoided that. Looks like for a very good reason.

Ended up skiing for just a few hours. Stuck to corduroy until my feet were cold enough. Hard to believe it has been such a shotty winter so far. Beer tasted great with my lunch at the foggy. Good day to be at the River.

On a side note, anyone hear about Killington having only one way that got you to the bottom? I thought I saw that somewhere on the forum but I could have imagined it. SR must have 7 or 8 bottom half choices. Guns were turned on all over Dream Maker, Mini Whitecap, and Tempest too.

What a day of skiing!!! I miscalculated my arrival time and got there about 8AM, lifts don't start turning until 9 AM weekdays. Anyways, I pulled into the lot and it was half full, and the lifts were turning. I'm wondering what is up with my watch and head on in. The lodge is full of ladies, many bundled up with rosy red cheeks. (It is cold and windy out there.) I take another look at my watch, then I ask one of the ladies. Seems they had a trail open real early for a ladies group, there for race training.

I relax, read a magazine, and head to lift for 8 AM. I love Lazy River and it is open, so I take that, head over to the slow triple up Spruce Mt. American express is open. That, however, doesn't mean it is any fun. Hard pack, windblown whales, icy, crusty, tough. I did hear one person shout $&!**** as I was heading up the lift. I took American express anyways. Oh well.... Took off outa there at overdraft and headed down lower down draft, which was nice, but it shuttled me back onto American Express. I headed back down to the Barker quad and did laps on Right stuff (quickly becoming one of my favorites), the punches, Ecstasy, Monday Morning and the cascades. Real nice skiing.

After break, I headed over to the Chondola and took Escapade, eventually going thru the beginner area and repeated that trip, avoiding the beginner area, back down Lower Lazy River to the Barker quad for a couple more laps of my favorites for the day. Things were starting to scrape off and I've been skiing confidently all day. My legs are getting stronger and I'm gaining confidence. i didn't want to get cocky and ice was just starting to show at 12:30, so I called it. Best day so far. I'm going again tomorrow if it doesn't rain. It was that good!

One interesting event today. I was heading down Escapade and there were three teen girl snowboarders, all boarding facing right, tight to the right. Only option to pass was on the left. I chose a good long wide area to pass, and they all just drift to their backside without even looking to see if anyone else is on the trail. I hollered HOOOOO! and they all abruptly turned away from me. Literally, I was 20 feet away from them, even on the hill. Normally, I never pass behind a boarder, for this very reason, but they were so tight to the right, I couldn't pass right of them. Fortunately, it was just the 4 of us on that slope and they heard me. Wish they knew how to look before changing direction.

I will be there tomorrow night for the Holiday break. I hope they groom Amex for me. Nice report. I have seen race groups on the hill early all year long. Seems like an effort to find some a way to get the racers training without us and vise versa..

Times like these define why I would call SR my home mountain back east.
