NEWRY, Maine -- One of the nation's only freeskiers to hold the position of Terrain Park Manager at a major resort, Nick Roma is leading an experienced crew (of mostly snowboarders) in a new direction at Sunday River. The number of full time park rangers will be growing from three to six for this season to better maintain the terrain features and improve upon the overall vibe within Sunday River's five terrain parks and Superpipe.
"The increase in park rangers will allow us to keep the parks in primo shape throughout the day," said Roma. "We'll also be able to better educate skiers and riders that are not as informed on park etiquette. Aside from keeping things pristine, I'm really looking forward to bringing a new level of creativity to our parks, in the size of features, the way they can ridden, and what they are made out of."
Rocking Chair, the resort's signature terrain park will continue to feature the largest elements offered at the resort with a premium placed on variety. Jibbers should keep their eyes open for new materials, multiple take-offs and new rails.
Rocking Chair will also host Sunday River's No Bib Jib Series, which allows riders and skiers to compete as a team and banter back and forth on the event website. Registration is now officially underway at www.sundayriver.com/nobibjib. This four part season series is a team event rather than individual and it will be as active online as it will be on-snow. When teams register they get access to their own personal and interactive event webpage.
Sunday River hosted the Heat Harvest Superpark on the White Heat Trail in April of 2006. It was the first time an invite-only superpark event of that magnitude had been attempted on the east coast. Nick Roma and his crew of builders spent 60 hours in snowcats farming a season's worth of snowmaking down White Heat. Upon completion, the east's best skiers and riders showcased the most progressive skiing and riding of 2006 on their private terrain park. "Roma and his crew are super dedicated," said Geoff MacDonald of Meathead Films. "Not only did they undertake the first ever eastern superpark, but they delivered. With Nick handling the on-mountain action and some new folks behind the scenes, I'd say the future looks bright. Oh yeah, and go see Snow Gods. If you're in the East, it's coming to a town near you." Plans are in the works for Heat Harvest II. Sunday River's projected opening day is Nov. 10. All For One Passes valid at all eastern American Skiing Company Resorts including Killington, Mount Snow, Pico, Attitash, Sunday River and Sugarloaf/USA are projected to sell-out prior to the Oct. 10 deadline. Up to 8000 eastern skiers and riders who want to purchase are likely to miss out due to the anticipated early sell-out.
