I took a look around Sunday. Hard to see how it will come together, but I'm looking foward to it. TVDave from Sr will probably have a video of this as well posted on the Sr web site. Timing will be good so folks can see it over the fall festival weekend.

Towers flying on Friday!
October 1, 2008 14:32 by Sunday River

This Friday, October 3 is the date for flying in the lift towers. All are welcome to come and watch, but please stay off of the trails and watch from South Ridge Lodge. Also, be advised that traffic will not be allowed on hotel hill road between South Ridge and Barker as loads will be flown over this road.

Photos and video to come!

If my boss wasn't out of the office this week (leaving me as the lone IT dork), I'd take the day off tomorrow and go check it out... oh well. Another day to use for skiing.

Interesting observation: both SR and K-Mart are installing new lifts. SR has a blog and pics...Killington has very little. Nobody seems to be following or at all interested in Killington's work. Why is this? Thoughts?

I'm interested in K's project. But sort of from a different angle. I'd still like to know why they went with a DC drive rather than an AC VFD. Makes zero sense in today's world for a major detach installation to be installed with a DC drive.

I spoke with VP Mt Ops @ K last year when they were still planning the project. I think it's a good thing, overall. We'll see how it works out this season. I'll probably drive down to the K for a few turns this year.

Everyone hates them, and thinks the new owners are ruining the place. From my perspective in the industry, Killington is going to turn a profit and really thrive again in the future because of the decisions the new ownership has made. Granted, I understand why people have been upset. But you need to take a step back and look at the big picture. There's a lot more to it than meets the eye.

more [. . .] than meets the eye.

I was going to post a picture from the Transformers cartoon, since that phrase always makes me think of it, but, now that I'm not 8 anymore, this shot from the Transformers movie speaks much more to me......

What are the advantages of a DC drive vs an AC drive?

Initial cost. A DC drive will reduce their bottom line for the project, but they are not as efficient and the overall operating costs will be higher. Therefore, over the lifetime of the lift, they will end up spending more money even though they saved money on the install.

Went to Sunday River yesterday to watch the towers get lifted into place. Love watching this type of operation! Wind and rain delayed it for a while, but thiogs got under way just after noontime. These pictures were taken from South Ridge Lodge parking lot. Have some video too and will post later. I was bummed when the rain came back and the chopper was doen for the day, didn't get to take pictures/video of the ground crews in action placing the towers. Pictures below are a couple of shots of the chopper and the gondola cabins.

Not everyone. I really would like to get back there this year and give them a try. I have only skied there when they had the best early season skiing a few years back under ASC ownership. From all I have heard, sounds like I would enjoy the place more now (reduction of crowds being my biggest issue previously). Funny how it might take reducing the amount of skiers to improve the product and turn a profit. I really appreciate their long term approach. They weren't afraid to piss a few people off in the short term.

EDIT: Corrected per BigK's post which I had not scrolled down far enough to see.
