What's the consensus here? I am supposed to go with friends, but I am wary of spending the $120 on a two-day pass, plus lodging...will it be worth it?

Well, what do you mean, "well worth it?" Sunday River has plenty of snow from what I hear.

I really have no complants about conditions this year. While most natural snow trails are thin cover/closed. The ones that are open I have found to be pretty good.

Sunday River IMO is always a great value. You can spend a little and you can spend alot, but it comes down to do you enjoy yourself.
The River does not leave you unhappy. There are a good amount of SR and AZ cross over posters, myself included. I have not made as many trips as I wanted up there this year. My Loss.
With the Winter being a little under what we all wanted... the River will have alot of mm snow and great grooming. If I had a choice that is where I would be. I would suggest the ASC Bronze pass if availible next year your $120 would be 1/3 of last years early season pass price. I would suggest a pm to GA2ski. I think its fair to say he is our most knowledgeable SR guy and you will get a straight answer.

Bethel ME is the driest spot in Northern New England ib my opinion. I was there last weekend, and Sugarloaf. Sugarloaf had roughly 24in base, and SR had nothing. If you want to ski groomers go to SR you'll have blast. But if you are looking for anything else don't go. There was not a single mogul on the mountain, not to mention you could not get get into the trees....

True Mother nature has not blessed Sr with the most nature snow this winter, but after the NCP (non-crystalline precip) that is predicted to hit the whole region tommorrow night, SR will have the best possible conditions in NE. No recovers better than Sr from nasty weather.

FYI - SR seeded bumps on Tempest on Monday and the bumps on 3D were short but okay two weekends ago.

Iskibumps, i will echo thetrailboss and ask you to expand on what you define as a good value. no place in new england is likely to have bumps worth skiing this coming weekend after the rain and a freeze. if you like what sunday river has to offer, it may be a good value for you, but we need to know what you are looking for to make a recommendation.

I think the point was if we get rain, all the snow SR makes and the grooming brings them back quick. Also his gang was already going to the River.
I have to go by 2nd hand accounts, but I have got 2 ball busting calls at work in the last 2 days from friends at the River laughing at me cause the skiing was good and I was at my desk.

I said after the rain that is predicted to hit the region tomorrow. On ther other hand it might not be enough rain to to melt the natural bases that Northern Nh and Vt areas got this past weekend. Also If you are looking for groomers, don't head to those mountains as all the natural snow blew off the trails and into the woods. I know as i was at Jay on Sunday.

What i meant is that SR can recover from bad weather faster than any mountain in the northeast. If the conditions are sketchy throughout the region, (this is not the case at today) SR is where I'll head for the best possible conditions. Even though there is very little natural snow.

Right.
I was there last wknd and heading up tomorrow too (not because its my fave place by any means).
Last weekend SR was pretty crappy, blue ice on the cattracks, boilerplate elsewhere. Some areas got a couple inches on Sat and Sunday wasn't bad at all on certain parts of the mtn. And yes people were in the trees.

THIS wknd however, could give SR some much needed snow... I'd watch this system over the next 36 hours

the 2' that cannon received was dust, long gone. even by the end of sunday last weekend, cover was nasty and the groomers were scraped down beyond belief. after this rain storm, the natural snow trails will likely be totaled. if this guy wants groomed skiing and likes crowds and big ski resorts, SR may be a good option. SR definitely has a good pace of recovery. actually, considering the rain, crowds might even be low and the rate of trail deterioration not as bad as normal. if you don't mind the high price, not a terrible option, though nothing i would consider for myself... when making recommendations it is all about finding out what is right for someone else that might have different needs and expectations than your own.
