Date(s) Skied: November 13, 2010

Resort or Ski Area: Sunday River

Conditions: Manmade - groomed

Trip Report: Had a good day # 1 of the season yesterday with snowmonster (his day # 2 of the season).

Only thing open was T2 to the Locke Mid-station... Cover on Upper Sunday Punch looked decent from the lift, but there were probably lots of exposed rocks at the top, evidence of snowmaking on Jungle Road (decent coverage) and Ecstasy (not so much).

A fun line of bumps started developing down the right edge of the trail as the day went on, we lapped those 5 or six times in a row.

Overall, a very enjoyable day for day 1, aside from one incident:

While skiing the above - mentioned line of bumps on the right side of the trail, I went to turn left, and when I loaded my weight onto my right ski, my heel just popped out of the binding like I had pushed down the heel piece... Not being able to turn and headed towards the brush on the right side was scary... I managed to fall to stop myself, but jammed my knee a bit... No big damage, and I could put weight on it just fine after a couple minutes... It is pretty tender today, and I'm sitting on the couch with ice on it right now...

Some pics:

Stopped for a photo shoot part-way down T2:

After the skiing we hit the Sunday River Brewing Company for some food... Free wings and potato skins! (Available 3-5PM every Sat. during ski season they told us)... the wings were pretty damn good, the potato skins pretty good.

Thanks again to snowmonster for driving and the company.

I had a great day.

A couple things to consider here, unless it really was just a fluke:

  1. New boot with a slightly different BSL? Make sure the forward pressure is correct.
  2. Did you dial down your bindings for the offseason? Maybe they're not set correctly.

If you're concerned, it's probably worth it to have the binding/boot interface & release test checked by a tech. If it happens again, definitely get it checked.

Looks like a good time, still jonesing for my first day this year!

Same boots, same skis as last year...

I just remembered that I clicked out before that run to check my base... I may have picked up some snow / ice on the bottom of my boot that may have contributed...

Bindings weren't backed off over the summer, and were otherwise solid... Snowmonster commented that I may need to up the DIN on them as I'm only at 7 and I'm skiing more aggressively now...

I was going to bring them in to the shop for something else anyway, so I'll probably have them check the binding while they are there.

Great skiing with you yesterday, wjenness! Welcome to the new season. Let's ski again soon.

Have the shop take a good look at the binding. I think you need to reset the DIN. You're definitely no longer a Type 2 skier. Hope the knee heals well.

Those wings were not only free, they were good!

Sorry to hear about the knee, I hope its not too bad.

Sounds like a good time otherwise though! Free skins and wings afterward must have been an awesome way to cap the day!

Thanks for the well wishes guys...

Things are feeling better today... Now it just feels like a pulled muscle in my calf. I'll take it easy this week and I should be good by the weekend. :)
