2006-2007 Report # : 42

Trip Report: We left Sugarloaf and headed back to Sunday River Monday night. Had a great burger at Les Otten's "Phoenix" and watched the groomers work on the slopes (the restaurant had a copy of the local paper on the men's room wall. The lead article, ironically, was the sale of Killington/Pico). We went to the hot tub and got some advice about the conditions--10-2 was the prime time to ski and it was not worth getting up early. So we went to bed, dreaming of corn snow. We slept in and left the Inn at about 9:30am, taking the shuttle to Jordan.

Good advice. The slopes were a bit firm at 10am. We hopped onto 'Bakah' where I noticed a new, narrow, twisty trail that dumped onto Agony. I had to hit it. We skied down Ecstasy to Lower Upper Cut and found the entrance to the new Southpaw trail. Who says that Sunday River doesn't have narrow New England runs???!!! This was a gem. Very nice.

Next run we did was Right Stuff, which was firm, but nice. Some ice in places. We then took Ecstasy to Sunday Punch, which was great. From there we hit T2 and headed over to White Cap.

Ms. TB was interested in skiing White Heat after having done White Nitro. It was about 11:15am or so, and things were softening up. We found that Upper White Heat was slush on ice...and was dicey in spots. We made it down to the choke point on the trail and then charged down the steepest part. From here down, it was awesome. Corn and sugar snow that your skis sliced through. Amazing. Ms. TB was :D with her first run down it. "That wasn't bad...I kept waiting for the steep part!" Obsession was also in good shape. We took Salvation back down to Bim's Whim and Cascades for a break.

From here, we headed over to Jordan. While the snow was getting a bit heavy on the eastern side of the resort, Jordan was perfect. Just soft enough but not too heavy. We did two spins on each of the three runs--Lollapalooza, Excalibur, and Rogue Angel. Of the three, Excalibur was probably the best. Rogue Angel had some thin spots at the top, but the bottom 2/3 was mint. Excalibur was similar. Ms. TB was in her element....she loves Jordan.

It was now about 1:30pm or so, and we decided to head back to Barker for lunch. Ms. TB called it quits at this time and I decided to do a few more runs. I did Downdraft, which was in good shape and nice and soft. I then decided to do a hail mary and skied all the way over to White Cap to do Shock Wave. I had heard that it was open (in the morning it was closed) and skiing nicely. So I took Jungle Road to T2 and Lower Obsession. Awesome snow.

I rode up the White Heat Quad and was seriously considering White Heat again since it looked very nice and soft. But in the end, I skated past the entrance and right down Shock Wave, which was very nice at the top and soon got quite bumpy. That fall line never is boring...double at the top and unforgiving for the rest of the ride. The bumps were pretty good...I was going to stay in the center where they had groomed it out, but I found that stretch to be a bit too firm, so I picked some soft bumps on the side. Probably one of my favorite runs at SR.

From here, I got back on White Heat and did Obsession to Heat's Off and Cascades. Sugar snow the entire way. It was about 3:25 and time to head back to Vermont. I could barely ski and was catching a bad head cold.

What an amazing weekend....three spring days and a new ski area. And major kudos to Ms. TB who skied with me run for run. She skied some incredibly tough stuff with great form. For only skiing for four seasons, she has come a long way!
