Date(s) Skied: Jan 23, 2011
Resort or Ski Area: Mt Ellen at Sugarbush
Conditions: Packed powder, powder, ego boosting corduroy
Temperature: +4 degrees base, -7 at the top of the Northridge chair with temps dropping through the day
Trip Report: I skied wiith friends at Lincoln Peak on Saturday with the expectation of brutally cold weather. Instead it was a sunny day, minimal wind and temps in the teens with great conditions. Sunday was once again sunny, but the temperature took the expected drop below zero. The temperature at the base was maybe 4 degrees when I got on the Inverness lift at 9:30.
Mt Ellen is usually quiet -but today it was like skiing my own private mountain. My warm up was down Brambles which had great snow/bumps up top and corduroy on the lower third of the trail. I was literally the only person on the Inverness chair for my first few runs. I mixed it up between groomers, bumps and woods. I never took the summit chair figuring it wasn’t worth the ride in the cold. On most trails I saw maybe two or three other people, most of the time no one. Favorite trails today were a solo run on Hammerhead, enjoying the quiet solitude of a trip on Lower FIS, ripping corduroy on Elbow and Crusier and powder on Semi Tough and Semi Tough woods. Sugarbush is in great shape and the outlook is for continued cold weather and snow in the forecast. It has to be COLD in VT tonight – it was 7 below when I left my place at Mt Ellen at 3:30 today.
