Just wait till everything gets finished. You won't be bored, I promise.

2012.........

I've ridden Highmount.. To me - it still doesnt beat what i can get at Hunter...
In fact i know people who live across the valley from there and they said they'll still go to Hunter...

Again.. no offense to anyone - it's just my own take..

I think Plattekill would get the nod as the Alta of the Catskills but those comparisons are always silly.

I was gonna go for Plattekill as Solitude, Brighton or Brian Head - smaller, but worth the trip given the right conditions and available time away from enjoying the bigger brothers...

...I guess your view that would make Belleayre kinda Snowbirdish....

here's a quick list of those groups for and against the resort: LINK.

Great post adamti91! You have consistently accurate insider info about Belleayre. Thanks!

Interesting list you linked to of the for/against groups. Here is one not mentioned there: I got an email from Belleayre Mountain Racing Association last April that said, in part, "The Coalition to Save Belleayre has asked the BMRA to send its members a draft letter for them to send out if they are in support of the project to let the elected officials know of their positive support."

The CSB's support is public knowledge, but it is interesting to see the lengths they try to extend influence through.

The draw of Highmount right now is that it's akin to back country since you have to work for it. It's not all that hard or that much vertical, but you can get fresh tracks longer after a powder day.

When the project is all finished, Highmount is really the smallest part. In the end there will be more vert. than Hunter.

I am in favor of the Belleayre Resort and improvements to Belleayre Ski Center. I am tired of NY City controlling what does and does not get developed in the Catskill Mountains because NY City wants their water.

Catskill Mountains have way too much poverty all because NY City Watershed is the top political priority. Economically the NY City Watershed in the Catskills is analogous to West Virgina Strip Mining leaving the local people poor and making it very difficult to live. On the other hand, Environmentally the Catskills are safer than most places because you know their not going to strip mine the Catskills or build toxic waste industry because of the NY City Watershed issues.

Why is it that the beautiful Catskill Mountains have an impossible task of trying to complete against Vermont for tourism?
Answer: NY City Watershed.

BTW for a good Belleayre trail map download the Belleayre brochure

These are ridiculously silly comparisons, but just to play along with the Utah/Catskills analogies...I'd say Belleayre is to Solitude, as Plattekill is to Powder Mountain, as Windham is to Deer Valley, as Hunter is to Snowbird.

I think that is a pretty good analogy!

When I stand on top of Hunter I have never thought of Snowbird or any other Western resort. When I stand on top of Snowbird I definitely don't think about Hunter or Belleayre.

How about this comparison...

Belleayre is like Bolton Valley..a little steep on top..flat on the bottom 2/3..
Hunter is like Killington...a weekend zoo and lots of rude New Yorkers..
Windham is like Stratton..intermediate terrain and lots of wealthy people with a sense of entitlement..

Most of those rude a-holes are from PA anyway... But they stay on the belt parkway so no worries..

Yeah. They own half my town :x.

for better or for worse... We're in bed with NYC now in Hunter as well...
I did get sewers hooked up to my house and got a nice rebate to help defray the cost...

This is getting funny :) The comparison thing was meant to be more about ambiance and skier character, rather than the almighty often-fictitious Vert ~~~

FYI - Short Q & A with "Local Luminary: Dean Glitter". This is a new article, I think.

snip--->>>

...As an enterprise which will have its own sewer and water, its own road system, its own security department and its own emergency medical staff, the resort will make no demands on public services while still contributing millions of tax dollars to the towns and the fire departments....

...In 2010, I will be 75 years old. I came here 40 years ago to participate in the work of Swami Rudrananda—which I still teach—and perhaps, at the end of the day, I will simply pick up my begging bowl and take to the roads.

We knew it was coming from somewhere.

Probably hasn't been to Hunter in years.
