Powerhound’s post on never having heard of Whiteface (kids?) got me thinking. Has there ever been a sporting event that meant more to American’s then The Miracle on Ice? I don’t think there has. Anyone think of one that compares or surpasses it?

I don’t even like hockey, but I remember how good I felt after we beat the U.S.S.R. People in my neighbor where hugging each other outside after the game and running around with American flags.

USSR v. USA

The juggernaught U.S.S.R. (remember them?) team vs. the U.S.A. miracle kids was a momentous international incident. It was, of course, interpreted as proving the inherent superiority of our system versus theirs. To consider a hockey game as proving anything like that was silly, but then, where are they now?

Memory Lane?

Yes, I remember "Broadway Joe." I listened to that game live on AFVN (Armed Forces Viet Nam) radio while on "Greenline" (perimeter) guard duty in the middle of the night. Keep in mind, there is about a 12 hour (they are ahead of GMT) time difference between the east coast and that part of Asia. All the "crackers" hated the Jets. I was not much of a football fan, but loved hassling the rednecks over it!

Jesse Owens in Berlin?

Jesse Owens winning 4 Gold Medals in the 1936 Olympics in front Adolph Hitler seemed like a nice event.

If you were around to see that event and still actively ski, I want to make a few runs with you. You are my idol!

BTW, I believe that was the world's first TV broadcast of a sports event. Can you imagine? Some aliens way out there in the cosmos are just getting the first TV broadcast from our planet, and it is dominated by pictures of jack-booted Nazis marching past Hitler and giving him the old "straight-arm" salute. Doesn't speak well for our planet.

There are lots of things that don't speak well for our planet. As Calvin once said, "The surest sign of intelligence in the universe is that they haven't contacted us yet."

I remember watching theh '82 Olympics, and being all excited, but not really knowing why (I was 9).

82? I don't recall that one. I remember '80 (Winter at Lake Placid, Summer boycotted by U.S. in Moscow) and '84 (Winter at Sarajevo, Summer in L.A.) but not '82

I'm guessing that Brettski would join me in agreeing that The Miracle at Lake Placid in '80 is only surpassed by the Sox series win last year.....  :D

When we beat the Russians or when we won the gold medal? Do you remember who we beat to win the gold?

I was 9. and I'm not a big hockey fan. But the Miracle on Ice was an amazing event.

'80, I was 7. Same memory, though. Or lack thereof.

No I wasn't around then :) But, the question was: Has there ever been a sporting event that meant more to American’s then The Miracle on Ice?

I'd probably rank that up there as #1. Others.

The Womens Soccer Team winning Gold.

Seabisut vs. War Admiral (Laugh...but horse racing was astronomically huge back then)

Secretariat's triple Crown (again this was huge)

The death of Dale Earnheart.

First Dream Team (NBA) to play in the Olympics. Although maybe not a huge deal here in the states, Every "basketball" nation was ecstatic about this.

USA losing the America's Cup (Dennis Conner)

Ali retaining his Championship (after being banned)

Jackie Robinson's first game.
