Got a used Canon A570IS off eBay for less than a bill shipped. Swapped out the 1GB slow speed SD Card that came with the camera with my high speed 2GB card and thought I was good to go. Got to the River today and took out the camera for a photo and it wouldn't start. I figured I put dead batteries into the camera. Get home and put in a brand new pair and still no dice. I was getting ready to report the thing DOA through eBay when I said "I must be doing something wrong".

Sure enough, I take out the card and it was in the "lock" position. Camera works fine. Don't forget to make sure your SD Card is not locked prior to inserting it into a new camera.

Totally. That is why I went back to square one to figure out what I did wrong. As a manager, I can not tell you how quickly people are quick to blame either other people or technology when they never even considered themselves. A Management podcast I listen to said it best... when looking for a problem, search in ever increasing concentric circles around your own desk.

I bought that camera for my kid.....outstanding camera....perfect for ski parka placement. Handles a lot more like an SLR than elph style powershots. You should be posting some nice pics this year.

I thought I posted some pretty nice pics with my a630 these past few years so this should not be a change  This "new to me" cam has much the same specs as my last camera. The improvements are that it is much smaller, only takes two AAs instead of four, weighs less, and the big upgrade is image stability. Otherwise, I anticipate image quality being about the same as my a630 though I hope the IS helps improve actions shots and low light by being able to stay in lower ISO.

One warning Steve....that baby eats AA's - make sure you have a good rechargeable kit and pack it in your bag to recharge in the lodge....carry extras. I think you will get better results than A630 tho I agree your pics are outstanding.

Thanks for delivering the past and future stoke for this still playing golf and tennis and riding the road bike flatlander.

Thanks for the warning. I use rechargeables and generally recharge after every use or two. No surprise it eats batteries as it is a slightly more powerful camera than the A630 which used four instead of two. The A630 could last me weeks if I pushed it or got forgetful about recharging. I try to recharge frequently instead of tempting fate though.

Taking some sample pics around the house, it seems like shot to shot lag is longer than the A630 in Auto mode. Though that is in very low light situations. Looking forward to getting this out on the hill this coming weekend and trying it out.

Shutter lag sucks. It's one of the reasons why, though it's heavy and bulky, I returned to my DSLR. Much better results and I bought mine used so I saved money there. I do have a Nikon Coolpix that I carry on me at all times but the low-light photos are not great. Very irritating. Before that I had a Panasonic Lumix for a year, but resold that because of the horrible shutter lag.

Compromise, right? I bet your shots will be even better with this new camera--you have a talent for great ones already!
