Alta pays lifties $$$ for caught passes. Substantial $$$. As has been noted in this thread, it's relatively common practice.
The modern RFID equipment can flag all sorts of things. You'd be really stupid to mooch off of someone's pass in this day and age. Also, if you're on Ikon, your pass will be suspended at ALL destinations until the mountain you violated is satisfied. Ikon is VERY understanding and will pretty much do whatever the resort asks them to do. Ikon does not want to lose partner mountains.
