Time for public flogging of resorts that misrepresent the truth and kudos to those that play it straight. Use today's rain/sleet event as a benchmark. Let the nominations begin!

Nominees for misrepresentation/downright lies?
:uzi:
1. Loon
2. Pats

Nominees for straight-shooters?
:smash:
1. Magic
2. Gunstock
3. Stowe

Rather than just straight out bashing, do you mind elaborating? What are the problems? Have you contacted the resorts directly with your concerns?

And I am going to defend Pats Peak. In my two seasons as a passholder, I was very, very satisfied with their level of service. They are a great bunch and their snow reporting was always good. They are very customer oriented.

Again, just saying "this place sucks" doesn't help us have a constructive discussion....

I just looked at both resorts. Pats Peak is reporting wet snow...not sure how that is a lie....and Loon is reporting that lifts are down due to wind...not sure why you think that is a lie either....

ahh but did you see this tidbit from loon on the conditions page?

SNOW REPORTER'S COMMENTS * March came in like a lion! Over a foot of snow from the weekend. 17 feet of snow so far this season.

Over a foot of snow that has been covered in ice, rain, sleet and warm wind. I dont think a public flogging is neccessay but to put that comment in after the crap that fell from the sky over the last 24 hours is a tad ridiculous.

I don't see that as misleading at all....if so, then ALL of the resorts should be criticized because I have seen them all using that language...it is referring to what has happened in the past few weeks. If you look at the whole report, rather than selectively taking statements out of context, you will see a different picture.

I think that some folks are upset about the weather and should not take it out on the ski areas....

like i said, i dont think it calls for a public flogging as billski put it. I dont even really care, i just think its humorous given recent weather events. And i'm not taking it out of context in the least, i simply quoted the part of the snow report I found interesting.

I have no interest or time to police web sites. If they elect to provide misleading information by omitting critical elements, I elect to flog in public. Particularly for-profit venues that are intended to attract paying customers. And please, I never said I was upset by the weather.

Loon
"DUE TO HIGH WINDS, WE WILL HAVE A DELAYED OPENING OF 10 a.m. this morning. March came in like a lion, dumping a FOOT of fresh snow over the weekend, which brings snow totals for the past week to over 2 FEET! Here's the snow tally: more than 6 FEET in February and almost 17 FEET, season to date. 100% of trails are open, plus 5 terrain parks, the minipipe and the superpipe -- 22 miles and 300 acres of incredible skiing & riding! "

Pat's Peak
We are 100% OPEN and have received another 8 inches of natural snowfall on Saturday! That's over 20 inches this past week and OVER 10 FEET of natural snowfall so far this season. Head to The Peak now to enjoy all this new snow!
(note that this is all that is posted on the main page, with no mention of the conditions at all.)

Isn't it dishonest to post a report on all the snow that fell in the last two weeks, when it's been 40 degrees + and raining for 2 days straight?

It's like the old hollywood question: yeah, but what has he done lately?

I want to know what happened to the slopes yesterday; before I decide to leave at 4 AM to ski today.

As another Pats Peak fan (and season passholder) I'll admit that their front page can have a bit of a positive/marketing spin to it. If you go to the snow report, however, I don't see anything that is glaringly inaccurate (although I find it hard to believe that most of their glades are really open).

If you insist on flogging them, however, go right ahead... just do it with a wet noodle. ;-)

I still smart from the bad old days when you had to rely on a toll call to a voice recording describing conditions which were not only non-standard, but very old if it served them well, and deliberately missing of key elements. Validation was nearly impossible, skiers weren't networked and most people you did know came back with reports that were two weeks old. It's easy not to "lie" by omitting such important facts. I love the way our society communicates today.

Wet noodles, I have plenty. Dispense I shall as my gesture towards keeping things on the level.

billski: I think there needs to be some more common sense. Any person would check the weather report or look at the sky before skiing or riding. I don't think it takes a rocket scientist to figure out that the weather today is less than ideal for skiing or riding. And I don't think we need someone to blatantly say that. Pats Peak has a link to weather.com and lists the current conditions right there. I don't agree with your assessment or this "public flogging" approach...to comment further:

I'm not sure what you think is "dishonest" about this report. Did you measure how much snow they got over the weekend? Now if they had said "we got 12 inches of snow in the past 48 hours," that is one thing...but they make it known that the lifts are on hold and to trumpet the snow that they did get in the past (again, common sense would say that a lot has happened since that snow fell)...I don't see how this is misleading. What is misleading is how you selectively read the report. You missed the weather report and conditions, which clearly read:

Loon said:
WEATHER CONDITIONS Mixed Precip

WEATHER FORECAST Mixed precipitation, gusty winds with temps in the 30s

You selectively quoted from the snow report. You did not cite the weather.com link that is prominently displayed...which at last check said it was cloudy and 34 degrees.

The one thing that is dishonest, and underhanded, is making out that there is some misrepresentation when the entire picture is not presented. You say that you "don't have time" to police websites. It took me about 20 seconds to look at the entire snow report pages and to see the information.

I understand that some might be very upset about this weather, but again, I see no constructive purpose served by bashing resorts that don't deserve to be bashed. How about we focus on who is going skiing this weekend rather than this bash-fest?

I'm going to Pats this weekend...the only down side is that the groomers are getting a bit old and the NCP this week will basically make the bumps and glades unskiable.

Do they groom the bumps?

And if worse comes to worst, one could call them and ask a live person what the conditions are....as I have done in the past.

It's not a go/no-go decision...I have some passes we bought that we need to use up.

I'm just going to head up and hope for the best. Based on conditions I've seen this season I know the groomers will be in good shape.

Gee trailboss, your defensive position seems like that from someone with a financial or employment stake at Pat's. I like Pats and I like to ski there. You have singled out Pats and missed the original intent of the thread, which was to collect other examples from other resorts. Policing the web sites includes the visit each and every resort web site and write letters, then correspond with each. Time wasted is much more than 20 seconds. People have short attention spans and read the headlines. Prudent people will read down to the level of detail of course. I never missed the weather report, I saw the convenience link. However, contrast that to, say a Stowe report, which right up front, before the weather link, integrates the conditions

"We've picked up 2-3" of snow overnight and we're seeing a snow/sleet mix early this morning. Forecasts are calling for freezing rain going over to rain showers this morning & back over to snow later this afternoon. We'll keep the website & snow phone updated. (P.S.--There's snow in the forecast for Friday night/Saturday.) We concentrated grooming on novice & intermediate terrain, plus Centerline & Hayride--55 trails in all; we also groomed 2 terrain parks & the halfpipe."

Nothing taken out of context there. They took the higher road and did not bury the facts.

Again, you have misunderstood, I am not upset about the weather.

Changing the subject to "who is going skiing this weekend" is avoiding the issue.

I briefly checked Ragged's web site and they were reporting Packed Powder conditions with zero trails open...but their web site accuracy has been a bit questionable this season anyway. :-?
