I want to pull the trigger on a last minute ski trip out West. What have any of you experienced in terms of pros and cons for waiting until the last minute? I just want to be sure the snow will be there when I get wherever it is Im going.

This is a great year for a last minute trip...it is all about the airline ticket...my group
planned too early and we had to postpone it till march due to lack of snow....hopefully
the west will be getting hit hard to make up for lost inches...

You might want to consider JH, if you can get there...

Living here in Jackson Hole isn't always easy, but every once in a while we get one of those days we live for. THIS IS ONE OF THOSE DAYS! With a foot of fresh powder overnight and another two to three feet in the forecast, there's not a whole lot I can say because at this point you've stopped reading and are already loading your skis or snowboards into the car. I'm guessing most people will hang up the snow phone this morning after they hear the words 'twelve inches of...' So what are you waiting for? See you on the slopes! -AC

As far as "snow being there", it's already there for much of the west. Tahoe is still low on the pack size and it hurts their super steep terrain. Otherwise, the rest of the "west", namely the Rockies, have enough base to open up all their terrain, including the off-piste.

However, this year appears to be of infrequent snow falls and warm temperature, you may or may not hit a good window even with only 2-3 week advance planning. So unless you could actually do TRUE last minute, like a few days out, now is as good as any.

Utah is picking up slowly but surely. The forecast looks pretty good for the next week but honestly you never know, the sun could cook it all in a couple weeks and temps could drop. There's always some risk unfortunately, but the base in a couple weeks should be fine.

As far as airline tiks go - do it know as they all tanked bad today on stock prices due to oil $$ rising. The prices will follow.

Steamboat is getting hammered..based on the trail map I think it may be a pretty moderate mountain? I've never skied there so I can't really judge but with 27" and another 18 on the way tonight it may be a good choice.

I would recommend JH to anyone as well after visiting and only skiing there for a day..I would be back there in a heart beat if I could swing it.

You guys should definately make the trip, there is some great skiing there. Nothing too too crazy but not flat either. It will be unreal right now. Leaving for Grand J tomorrow after skiing and may very well swing up there!!!

Anywhere else forecasted for snow in Colorado?
