Titus Mountain being sold to owners of Mountain Marts

Tuesday, October 4, 2011 - 9:09 am
MALONE – Titus Mountain ski area, the ski spot nearest to St. Lawrence County skiers, is being sold to a local family.

The Augustine family, which has owned and operated Titus Mountain since the 1979-80 ski season, is selling to a family of local owners who have built and operated a number of successful North Country businesses, the Monette family.

The Monettes are owners and operators of Adirondack Energy, Malone Transport, and Mountain Mart convenience stores.

Paul Augustine of Minnesota, who rose from his Midwestern farming roots to become a developer and owner of three ski areas and a recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Ski Areas Association for his contributions to the ski industry, passed away on Jan. 1. His surviving family members, who are in management at the flagship area Augustine first developed in Minnesota, Afton Alps, have sought new owners who could continue to grow Titus as a family-oriented ski area. They said they were concerned that any new owners continue to provide work opportunities to North Country residents, and recreational opportunities for people in northern New York and southern Ontario and Quebec.

With a mix of terrain ranging from beginning to advanced-level slopes and affordable pricing, Titus Mountain has operated for the past 30-plus years under the ownership of the Augustine family.

Among the improvements made to Titus Mountain during past three decades were the addition of seven chairlifts and a sizable expansion of skiable acres, which has included developing terrain on the upper part of Titus Mountain.

A chalet was also added, and bridges and tunnels were built to allow users to go back and forth from the lower section of the area to the upper section without having to travel by car. Park areas and a snow tubing area have also been added under Augustine’s ownership.

Titus Mountain also added a sand-and-gravel business, providing more year-round employment for local residents.

The Augustine family and the management team at Titus Mountain are confident that the Monette family's efforts will allow them to provide even greater recreational and employment opportunities for the Malone area and surrounding communities, according to a prepared statement from Titus Mountain management.

Right where I want to be
I wish the new owners good luck. I am actually going to check the place out next year when in the area and hope they continue the improvements.

aka Moon Valley before 1979. Plenty of fun times at the establishment in high school and grad school when I came. It was where the loyal order of the H.A.M.S. club was established in high school aka High Altitude Martini Skiers. I think it was the CYA ski club that sponsored the trips. Flasks of wine were the order of the day. Then my wife and I were chaprones for the Potsdam HS with other friends during grad school.

Warp, you rock Hell's Kitchen, right?

Hopefully this a good move for the mtn and its faithful . Lot of Canadians hit that place along with NNY'ers

Our group of skiers usally 5-10 of us hit that place about 15-20 times a season then rock Tremblant and/or Gore couple 3 days /month in Jan Feb March

Titus is the closest place at 75 miles .

Good for them. Used to night ski there a bunch when I went to SLU. Never bothered to try the upper half of the mountain as Id rather just go to the face, but I remember many a day drinking to the verge of blacking out then hucking myself in the park. Good times.

The 'backside' available during night skiing was pretty solid as well. Not enough to spend a day there, but enough to keep me entertained. Loved the true Malone locals bumping chairs, etc. Lots of skiing in jeans and snowmobile jackets.

The Upper is fun wider , longer runs and some nice outta bounds slackcountry up there for tree luvers, if that's your thing. Its a retro vibe, very laid back and inexpensive. It ain't gonna put yer heart in yer mouth but it is a fun day of skiing

I skied there once on Thanksgiving in powder probably 5 years ago. It was cool. My wife is from Malone so she grew up skiing there and even worked there for a while. She's a snowboarder but I decided to marry her anyways.
