The day started with some light snow as I parked at the Highland Center and made my way to the trail, hoping it would be broken out. It started out not too bad, but got less and less broken the further I went. It appears a single snowboarder barebooted up the Avalon and part of the way up A-Z towards Tom. The trail was partially broken, but heavily postholed and chopped up with about 6-8" of loose snow. Once the snowboarder decided to stop climbing and head down, the track pretty much vanished and I was left to break trail in boot to knee deep snow. At the Mt Tom Spur junction I made the right turn and headed up to the peak, which afforded amazing 50 ft views of cloud. I turned around and headed down to the Willey Range Trail where I had a quick stop for some lunch before tackling the next leg of the hike. The Willey Range TRail along the ridge was heavily drifted, up to thigh deep in spots. When I got to Field I decided to head down instead of continuing on to Willey like I had originally planned. All the trail breaking had me well behind my schedule and I had to get to work.
