Gunbarrel over Razor's or Challenge? IDK about that. I hate just about everything at Blue except for my friends who love the place, but Gunbarrel is sorta like Blue's Falls, IMO. Here's a Youtube of a little kid straightlining Gunbarrel:

If the same kid straightlined White Lightning at Sno, he'd probably not survive. Nor would he survive Avalanche at Denton or Rocket at CB.

As for NY, I'd rather ski The Rumor at Gore than anything at Hunta...

Don't think NY counts here... NY is in the northeast..Given that this message board is called "New England & Northeast Ski Forums," you'd think all polls about New England would include NY as well :)

But following your guidelines, my top 4 would probably be:

(1) Slides at Whiteface
(2) The Rumor at Gore
(3) Empire at Whiteface
(4) Lies at Gore

(5) is tough for me.. I won't rule out Lower K27 (Hunter), but Cloudspin or Skyward at Whiteface or some trails at Gore might beat it. I haven't skied in PA.

I can't believe anyone mentioned Denton Hill. It has the steepest trail in the entire east

I recall a J1/2 race at Denton a while back that three CT kids entered to chase points. They were all DNF's.

Just sayin'.....8*)

Until you ski it, it's easy to mock some goofy little backwoods place....

New York is a mid-atlantic state according to the census, USGS and EPA.

(1) Slides at Whiteface
(2) The Rumor at Gore

(4) Lies at Gore

Although, I haven't skied in PA, or VA I would agree with your top 4.

Then I stand corrected. Thanks for the info. Sorry for the mistake. I still think for skiing purposes the "northeast" designation (which might not even exist for the census/etc.) is best, though.

Denton is a great little mountain. Best skiing in PA, as far as I'm concerned.

And while they definitely had an over-zealous marketing department at one point, Avalanche is not a trail to be scoffed at. It is certainly NOT 66 degrees as they claimed, but it definitely is 66%, which is equal to about 33.4 degrees. That ranks it up there in the range of FIS at Glen Ellen. That's pretty steep for a PA trail, IMO.

So you like the triple fall line on Avalanche, though? :)

Sorry to hijack a thread that seems to have become a discussion of the five hardest runs in the Adirondacks (nominally mid-atlantic at best), but--back to the "mid-atlantic" issue--is there any decent skiing within reasonable weekend striking distance (lets say...within ~4-5 hours drive) of DC?

There's a reason why it's called "MASH". Mid-Atlantic Ski Hell. ;)

Most of the DC people go to Snowshoe and Timberline in WV...Seven Springs in Western PA, or Liberty/Roundtop/Whitetail in Central PA...I only live 18 miles from Blue mountain which is over 1,000 vert but I could see driving 4 hours there from DC...although I sometimes see Maryland plates in the parking lot..

I've heard good things about Blue Knob in Western PA which is 3ish hours from DC. High elevation for PA standards, lots of glades and not very crowded

Blue Knob is great with new snow. Very steep with lots of glades and rarely crowded.
They have great condo deals late season. They do have limited snowmaking capacity.

I haven't skied a wide enough selection to make a list, but I'll agree that Extreme at Denton is indeed a serious trail, and Gunbarrel at Roundtop is really steep for a brief section--haven't seen much that is steeper.
There is one trail at Montage that I remember being pretty steep as well, but it's been more than a decade so I don't know how it compares.

Lots go to Wisp in Maryland too.

I don't consider NY state to be Mid-Atlantic, even if the census people do.

Steepest and I guess most difficult I've seen in Mid-Atlantic is Lower Shays at Snowshoe.

Interesting info--thanks, everyone. I didn't give the area much of a shot when I lived there for a few years. Went to Whitetail for night skiing after a weekend storm one time, but that's it. There's a chance we may end up moving back that way, so I'm curious how bad it would be skiing-wise.
