I love how they take X-rays and then go...hmm nothing to see...An MRI is the ONLY way to see these things, and they know it. I tore my Meniscus, got it fixed, yet it still hurt for a while.. a lot of yoga fixed that , hasn't hurt since. When she is able, regardless of the outcome I alway recommend yoga or any type of stretching, prevents or at least minimizes scar tissue buildup after surgery.

Sorry to hear.

Tore my acl in march '11. Mtn biking within 6 weeks of surgery. Imho, most important is to strengthen the knee pre and post surgery. Get an mri to diagnose the issue. Then work it on the stationary bike.

Tore mine 30 years ago.

I quit skiing at the time and always promised myself to get back to it.

3 years ago I went to an orthopedist to get the knee fixed. He told me I have advanced arthritis and he said an ACL repair would lead me in severe pain. I told him I wanted to ski and he prescribed a don-joy brace with a compensating pressure load.

I have been skiing hard ever since with little pain and my ability is almost what it was when i stopped skiing 30 years ago.

I'd rather have an ACL, but you can work very well without one.

Yeah, ride the bike!

you guys have good trails practically from your doorstep and even beter trails 3.5 hours south. I would seriously consider getting into this big time as you guys live in Utah and it's really good for building muscle around the knee.

If you don't already have decent bikes get ready for the sticker shock. I suggest picking up a used hardtail on Craigslist. 29ers seem all the rage these days for xc biking but not a deal breaker. Buy them and ride them lots and lots!

Four knee surgeries on one knee and still going strong. MRI can only show things if they are visible. If nothing is seen in it does not mean all is well. The conclusive method is the knee manipulation. The Ortho should bend the knee up towards the body while lying down and rotate knee. The other test is for looseness. This is done by moving tibia forward and backward while knee is bent. No swelling does not mean anything either. See an ortho asap!

Pardon my ignorance, but what are 29ers? I'm not a big mountain biker

We're definitely getting bikes this spring. I've been eyeing a 29er for some time. We've got kickass biking trails in Park City, Snowbird/Alta, and right here in SLC.

Sorry to hear but with the surgery she will be back like it never happened. Unfortunately found out I tore my old patella ACL graft but I have put off surgery until spring and I am giving it a go snowboarding this season. I also had a meniscus repair on the same knee so this will be surgery number three. Best advice is to prehab as hard as you will rehab. Makes things so much better.

Biking is great. I got a 29er this summer and have also started a home routine with a bosu ball, exercise ball and resistance band... All seems to have helped with stability and strength. Hell I didn't even know I re-tore my ACL, was having some pain that I assumed was meniscus related. I'd probably be a bit more weary of skiing versus boarding with a tear though.

Not really, my knee is pretty tight even without the ACL. They did the looseness test on me and it didn't seem anything was wrong (swelling and pain said otherwise ...), but MRI showed the ACL was gone, sprained MCL, torn meniscus (though I think this was old), and quite a lot of bone bruising.

I also did a fair amount of biking after the accident and before the surgery.

Did they do the rotate test?

I love my 29er, but took some time to get use to. It's handles the rocky terrain a hell of a lot better, for a masher like me. 26ers have better agililty in tight turns. It took a little time to adjust to climbing with 29er.

Hoping for the best news TB. I tore mine two seasons ago. The recovery can be long but I skied all season last year. Knee feels pretty good now.

My wife had hers repaired a few years ago. She made a very quick recovery. She had the surgery done over the summer and was skiing by December. She ditched the brace after about 3-4 weeks of skiing. She's an Occupational Therapist and had the surgery done by a doctor in her group and her PT done by a co-worker.
