... We did not go up high enough to see Chute, however. I was impressed by how steep that area of the mountain is without snow on it. We especially noticed this when we hiked down to the base. It's a completely different perspective when you don't have skis on sliding on snow.

This quote gave me the idea for this thread.

Have you ever hiked a ski trail in the summer to find out the trail is so steep that you are doing more climbing then hiking?

A couple of years ago we hiked up the Face at Jay. At one point the dogs gave up and went around on Northway to get to the summit. Then near the top some people did not have the reach necessary to get up over a ledge without assistance. After we all go over the ledge we sat there and were amazed at how much steeper it seems in the summer and that we had actually skied it in the winter.

Technically speaking The Face is a small cliff. It gets filled in a bit by snow sort of like Tuckermans that allows you to ski down it. I'm guessing that the top of Green Beret wouldn't be very easy to hike up either.

I would also think any trail over a 30% grade would be very hard to hike up. Especially if it is wet.

So many expert runs are...............

As a high school student in the MRV, we would often "run" up SB North for training. You needed to get to the summit in an hour. I remember going up black diamond and laughing at just how steep it is. Same goes for a hike up Upper FIS or a hike down SB's Paradise or MRG's paradise. In fact, the LT area around Paradise at MRG is steep enough that there are a couple ladders in there.

Go hike the Tuckerman ravine trail in the summer or the Huntington's ravine trail and you'll be amazed at the steepness.

Must add at a later date here-- I recall hiking down Upper FIS and Paradise at the 'Bush with AHM-- blackflies on the former, and some weird mudslide on the latter, with no visibility for me re the weeds (OK, I'm short)-- I was praying for my skiis, as it would have been soooo much faster. Also, parts of Mt. Washington, Franconia Ridge, and Cannon (backside) are really really steep. I find hiking up this type of stuff is a lot easier than hiking down, but give me my boards, and all is well.

I think Lower Ovation and Devil's Fiddle at Killington are probably too difficult to hike up.

I don't get this thread. Ski trails that are too steep to hike? I can't imagine there are too many ski trails that are not hikable. Try hiking Madison Gulf, or the Six Husband's trail in the Northern Whites if you want to hike something steep!

The burning question is:
Where does "hiking" end and "rock climbing" begin?
You can really make it up just about any slope, there is just an increasing level of risk and difficulty to the point that safety equipment may be necessary. I don't think there is anything that is "skiable" in the winter that cannot be somehow ascended in the summer.

Edited the ASS out of my post :)

Most things I end up "ass-ending" are in the winter.

:dunce:

That's "ass-ending" as in falling on my ass, you sicko perverts. I know AndyZee was thinkin' it.

I really wasn't gonna touch this post, but I gotta know... Does this "ass-ending" have anything to do with the proposed mountain top brothel? If so, I didn't know it was going to be that kind of brothel!

I think Lower Ovation and Devil's Fiddle at Killington are probably too difficult to hike up.

I hiked Lower Ovation in my ski boots multiple times on Memorial Day weekend and although it was tough it was still doable. Same probably for Devil's Fiddle although I never hiked up that one - just skied down it. I agree with a previous poster that hiking up is a lot easier than hiking down. I hiked Double Dipper up and down once and can attest to that.

Mt. Bachelor's The Cirque. Steeper than Tuck's Headwall

Not to be a jerk, but I really don't believe that at all. Mt. Bachelor is not known as a steep mountain, and from pictures the Cirque doesn't even look that steep. There are not too many mountains out west that have anything steeper than the headwall.

Until you've stood on top of both The Cirque + Tucks both in winter + in summer as I have I don't think you can really say that. I definetly agree, Bachelor is on the whole not a real steep Mt., BUT The Cirque is a whole nother story.

Just my humble opinion......

The Lip or the headwall? I believe that it would be steeper than the Lip, but from the pictures it doesn't seem nearly as steep as the headwall.
