"Heading north, heading up...Pinkham Notch Picked up about 10 inches, and Hermit Lake in Tuckerman Ravine picked up 19 inches, with presumably similar conditions atop Wildcat. And lastly at the summit, we drop back down to 10 inches.

Why less at the summit. Well, as with many Nor'easters, the moisture just remains below the height of the summit, and areas 1000feet down hit the jackpot. Are we complaining...ABSOLUTELY NOT...especially this winter! This storm actually is our largest 24 hour snowfall since December!"

umm...yahoo!!

So how are the conditions at Tuck's this year? Are we going to have a decent season up there? Any suggestions on the best time to go (I'm thinking May)?

There's not as much snow up there as in past years...

Better make it sooner then later...

dmc's advice is spot on. the most recent snow might have reopened the sherbie, but it isn't going to be top to bottom for much longer (technically it isn't top to bottom since the little headwall is already gone). sooner the better for sure, though this weekend looks suspect. i was planning on going this weekend, but i don't like how the conditions are shaping up with the weather.

My thoughts exactly. Something about 20 inches of heavy snow on top of a frozen/refrozen surface with a grade like Tux doesn;t sit well with me. If you go...just be careful! I'll probably head up next week.

avy danger is at considerable and moderate for today. Any idea what the r*** that is coming thru Friday night will do to that? Would it stabilize or make it more likely to slide?

If the new snow doesnt have a chance to bond with the icey layer ands get loaded up with water - it will be potentially dangerous..

It's really a call that you'll have to make that day...

ya, no worries! i appreciate it actually.

one thing in life that scares the heck out of me is an avalanche. i have turned around (happily i would add) after digging snow pits more than once. tuckermans on washington is probably one of the most dangerous snow packs anywhere that i've been. just because of the heavy winds, snow, sleet, ice, rain combos that occur.

i would not be up there right now...but that's just me.

one other factor is whether it is even worth skiing if bonding happens and avi risk is reduced to low. it isn't really getting much above freezing up there lately, and rain followed by a night below freezing can really harden things up. i am looking forward to some sun to soften things up a bit after avi issues stabilize. i suspect things could still go either way for this weekend, definitely good to use caution and follow the reports. apparently two knuckleheads climbed up yesterday and got away with it according to the report. i don't understand why people think it is worth climbing up in moderate or worse conditions, there will always be other days... unless you screw up wanting today to be the day.
