Location - Pinkham Visitor Center > Tuckerman Ravine Trail > Huntington Ravine Trail
Length - about 2.5 miles each way
Difficulty - Moderate +
Summary - Fun hike, gorgeous day, glad I didn't have to hike the ravine!
The Once a Year Crew decided we had to see Huntington Ravine up close and personal, so my buddy Dan and I huffed and puffed our way up Tuckerman Trail and out Huntington Ravine trail to the big boulders at the base and had a great time. Tux was the usual - lots of people on a Sunday. But once on the Huntington trail it's a whole other world. Narrow, twisty trail with several crossings of Cutler River, lots of ups and downs especially as you get close to the ravine itself. There are some beautiful dark and mossy passages that are definitely worth checking out. After we got on the Huntington trail, we only saw one person all day, a guy who was heading up at 330PM into building thunder clouds.
Huntington Ravine was just what I pictured - two of the the three main gullies had running water coming down, and the central gully is incredibly steep with a smooth, sheer rock face. The other two (left and right) are rocky paths and are, again, incredibly steep. Makes hiking Tuckerman Ravine look like a kiddie walk.
That's a pretty good hike for us flatlanders - I was really glad we were turning back at the base. You'd have to be in some kind of shape to climb to the base, then up the ravine itself and then still have another 1000 vertical feet to go after that to the top of Washington. We hung out and had some lunch - a great day!!
