I'm definitely cheering for the folks at Big Squaw. That is the kind of attitude/community spirit that existed where I grew up in the NEK.

Re: Squaw. I see on the Friends of Squaw FB page they are looking for donations to buy a transporter that Sugarloaf has up on Craigslist used for $29k
http://maine.craigslist.org/hvo/4617066162.html

Would be a great way to give access to the whole mtn w/o investing a new lift...Its a very long drive for the 400' of intermediate vertical they offer now but as others have mentioned if the top was open w/o having to hike it would be pretty intriguing.

Damn. That's a good deal.

Hey guys,
First time poster. I've gotten to ski Big Squaw quite a bit since they have reopened. The upper mountain has some great terrain that is surprisingly in good shape considering how long it has been abandoned. Really hope these guys can keep this place going! They've done a great job so far!

Here is one of my trip reports with pics on the SLToday site: http://www.sugarloaftoday.com/chat/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=6562
Also my video skiing down Penobscot: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q_s7hsC1cMU

I must be a geek because I was thinking Star Trek (and also the Fly) when you said transporter. "Beam me up Scotty!"

That's the next wave of ski technology. Just hope you don't get teleported to the wrong area.

Anybody mention Saddleback yet? You guys from New England know about it, but it's so friggin' far from the mid-Atlantic that not many folks down here have been there and the rare few that get in the neighborhood go straight to Sugarloaf. Not only was the terrain good (glades and squiggly trails like Mule Skinner and Parmachenee Belle), but the views were superb. Nice lower key vibe too.

Beat me to it.... Especially nice during/after snowstorms..
Getting to Squaw's upper portion in the early morning should be interesting to try ...

Yes, I noticed that...$25 wknds and still $15 Fridays. We hit up BMOM on the way to the AZ Summit last yr and were treated with a foot of untracked in the woods. Some really good work a local group, "Angry Beavers of BMOM" are doing up there opening some lines in the woods.
I've never skied Abram but intend to this yr (likely on the Friday up to the Summit)

+1 on Black Mountain of Maine
Yes, the Tix price increase to $25 on Saturday and Sundays was necessary. Black Mountain of Maine's woods are going to be even better this year! We're a small group of skiers but things are changing year after year. The segments are starting to flow and offer a much needed challenge from the limited trail options. Lots of new lines for this season including openning up many rocks and drops. Fridays at BMOM on a powder day is the best deal going anywhere in New England. Its also a great mountain to go to when SR and SL are on wind hold. It's an easy 1/2 hr drive to Rumford from Bethel. Black's summit triple rarely shuts down thanks to the Mtn's lower elevation and the direction of prevalant winds with respect to the lift.

In the East:
- Burke (terrain wise, not management wise)
- Owl's Head
- Magic

Best resort worth flying to that nobody thinks about flying to:
- Red Lodge, Montana

Overrated western resort:
- Whitefish Mountain Resort (their snow is much wetter than Big Sky)
