Why Utah?

I just got my October 2006 edition of "Ski" magazine today. Take a look at page, 162 (Snowbird) page 166 (Solitude) page 168 (Alta) and page 170 (Brighton). I couldn't possibly state the reasons for moving to within 20 miles of these four ski areas any better then the way it is stated in the magazine. Nuff said.

Congratulations to you Peter, I just signed off on my copy of our home sale contract today and we are waiting for our home to be finished before we close sometime in November. While I am not moving to Utah, I am happy to at least live in the hills close to skiing.

Best of luck to you

UT is getting closer.

Update. The couple that made an offer on our house has signed a "contract of sale" and put down $25K to close the deal. I'm hoping for a mid November closing date followed shortly thereafter by our move west. Think (POWDER) snow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am a little late reading the news but congratulations Peter on finally achieving your dream of moving out West. May you spend many enjoyable days skiing Utah powder.

Kissing up might involve buying me lunch at the John Paul Lodge (look here: http://www.snowbasin.com/winter/john_paul_lodge.html ) just before we take the tram up to the top of the 2002 Olympics Men's Downhill starting point. You know, the first 500' of vertical with a minimum slope of 45 degrees! That will definitely burn off your lunch. After that, we can take some nice tree runs that start after the first drop. Just don't fall head first into one of the pits that tend to form around some of the larger pines because their branches deflect the powder as it comes down. BTW, don't forget to check out the Lunch Menu in PDF format. on that page.

When we come up this year..this sounds like a good plan for me as well. One of my favorite runs. And once you find you're way around the area, you can show me as well. I have rarely ventured far from the beaten paths in that area. Pretty much the mens and womans downhill. Hope to see you there.

I'm looking forward to meeting you out there. I wish I had had the opportunity to meet more AZ'ers here in the east. Unfortunately, I only came across the forum a year ago or so, and have had limited personal contact opportunities.

There are some really beautiful tree runs off to the left (as you look downhill). Actually, there are some groomed trails that sort of wind around that area. The fun part for "first-timers" is being able to take some nice powdery tree shots knowing that they will break out onto a trail to enable them to "rest" a bit before continuing down the mountain.

As I told Kingslug, I'm looking forward to meeting more of you "flatlanders" (just kidding) when you get out there. Assuming that I have been able to make the move and settle in by then, I'll do my best to "hook up" with some of you. I may have some of my own kids visiting around that time, but I will stay connected through the forum. When you or someone else has dates and places firmly established, PM me, and I will get back to you.

On The Way!

After interminable delays due to personal medical problems it is really happening. I am writing this from a Holiday Inn just off I-80 in Cheyenne, WY. I've got a Penske 26' truck with a car trailer and my Hyundai GT loaded on it. My wife is following in her Civic. We have had some delays. Day one was nearly 6 hours of driving to cover 110 miles in a snow storm a week ago Friday. Day two was delayed because of a visit to friends in PA. On day three, the exhaust pipe on my wife's Civic broke off just behind the resonator and dropped down onto the pavement. That took an hour to remove from under the car, and swap her Civic for my GT off the trailer. Of course, she doesn't like my GT seat on long trips, so we spent three hours on day four getting the Civic exhaust fixed so we could swap cars again. Then we hit heavy rain that slowed things down for another day. The truck runs and handles well, but it is governed not to exceed 70 MPH. That is annoying when the speed limit is 75. The most annoying thing is that my wife can't seem to drive more than 250 - 300 miles without complaining. Today, Saturday, we were going to get in a 350 mile day when snow started before noon and we had to stop here in Cheyenne. I stopped at a DOT facility and they were showing heavy snow and poor visibility on the highway cams in the Laramie area with trucks pulled over waiting for the storm to abate. Now it looks like we won't get to SLC until Monday. Better late then never I guess.
