Apparently the owner is away on a trip...I was so bummed when I heard this this morning. The place is an institution. Heading down to Middlebury tonight so we're going to stop and pay our respects on the way.

OMG...when I was growing up that was the place we went most often when the family went out to dinner. The "family" style of eating was awesome. I guess I liked it cause I have a big appitite....lol. I remmeber they put on the table a huge bowl of mashed potatoes with gravy which I loved to eat way too much of.

When my father was in his last days a couple of years ago we talked about the great times we had there.

Apparently earlier news reports of the owner being away may have been false. The owners car was found behidn the building with his dogs in it. The owner recently had gotten in a weeee bit of trouble recently....lots of theories running around the office here....

Sounds like a case of human induced lightening (also known as arson) to me.

oh..... that's not good. I wondered if he set it and skipped and left the dogs safe in his truck knowing someone would find them and take care of them. If the blaze is found intentional, maybe that was the plan....If it was not intentional and a sheer fluke what a bummer. It ends the same either way... :(

The latest news I have heard is that they found a body in the rubble and although not scientifically confirmed they think it's the owner.

Law inforcement is having a hard time around here lately, Montpelier police chased a man into the Winooski River, lost him, assumed drowned, think they find him the next day at home so all is well, not the same guy as the guy they chased is found floating in the river a few days later.

Rescurers transport a woman with a sprained ankle by boat, boat sinks and woman drowns cause she is strapped onto the boat.

Montpelier police officer claims a little pot bellied pig is charging him, shoots the pig but the wound suggests otherwise, everyone says the pig is very docile and friendly. Luckily the officer was a bad shot as the wound is not life-threatning. This is all just in the past week.

HEH! Police officer chased by pig....much better than the news stories in the Boston area I saw the two years I lived down here....there seemed to be a recurring theme of car thefts caused by certain minority groups...which the newschannels HAD to broadcast over and over...

ChildHood Memories Gone

I just heard about this from my mother. My family has a long history in Middlebury, VT. I lived 7 years there myself, and this was my favorite place to go. I was just there at the beginning of August. I was awe struck when I heard the news. No matter the personal problems Mr. Hesslink was having, the Dog Team was more than one owner. It was a cultural, communal and historical landmark of Vermont. I hope they rebuild, I don't want the Dog Team to end so tragically.

Rumor has it that he may have been trying to torch the place and it went wrong.
I heard a similar rumor yesterday....that he turned all the gas on and lit a match. The question is, did he try to get out, or were his intenions to perish in the fire...more will come out this week I'm sure.

So sad...

I'm not from Vermont, but I have been going up to my grandmother's cabin near Lake Hortonia since I was born. I have since continued the tradition with my son, we go to my mother's house in Hubbardton now.

I've been to the Dog Team many times, and was saddened to hear this news over the weekend. It was a great place to eat, good food and a great atmosphere. I was recently married and was hoping to bring my husband there... now that will never happen.

Too bad I don't have pictures of it. My grandmother does have a mug... she better hold onto it!!!
