Date(s) Skied: Sunday Night 1/27/08

Resort or Ski Area: Wachusett Mountain, MA

Conditions: PP, Loose Powder, Windblown; Temps in the 10s with bitter wind chills and upsloping wind

Trip Report:

After the big ocean storm pulled in closer than expected, Wachusett was left with 3" of snow which really did wonders with the surface. Lots of changes since Friday night and great snow all night. More crowded than normal for a Sunday night as well.

Conifer: Was the only run I skied before grooming and that was the only run I took down it. Plenty of chopped up and slightly bumped up powder and a lot of people wandering around that weren't used to that kind of snow. Pretty nice.

10th: The bumps are back, but were junk tonight. While they were soft, it was all boilerplate in between them, they had terrible lines, and they were very small too. The rest of the trail was great though... the chute before the headwall is open now although that got a bit scraped. That was all I found on the entire trail that was scraped... good air off the road and once again on the last leg.

Smith: Also held up really well most of the night, although the top of the headwall was beginning to lose its battle with the wind. A few scraped spots in that area, but they were avoidable. Good air off the drop-off before the headwall... caught a wind gust mid jump one of my runs and almost pulled off that those guys did but thankfully I landed on my skis instead of in the hospital (anyone see that?... those were some wicked crashes). Lower also had lots of fun rollers like usual. Polar had a 2-3 minute line for singles and was in full speed.

Frannie's: Still unchanged since Friday. That big ice patch is still lingering on the right side of the top of the trail, but a lot better than Friday when it went all the way across. They've managed to rope off every entrance to the Vickery liftline so unfortunately no runs in there tonight.

Look Ma: Too windy to hit the jumps much tonight. Halfpipe was pretty good although again it was too windy to get enough speed to do anything. Still not checking for passes at the top... I think today was the 3rd time I've been in there without a pass. Minuteman was in full speed and the line was typically a bit shorter than Polar.

So tonight was good... next trip will be Friday (maybe sooner).
